Today we’d like to introduce you to Christi Wilson.
Christi, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my cosmetology career later than most. I decided to put myself through night classes when I was 27 years old. I worked full time and then spent three nights a week going to class and then would spend every Saturday there as well. It took me two years to complete all the semester hours needed to take my test. I remember telling my teacher that my goals was to have and run my own salon within two years of finishing up school, which leads me to where I am today. I worked with my mom for a year in her small salon until one day I decided that I wanted something bigger and better for both of so we opened up Salon on Main.
My dream come true. It’s everything I could have wanted and then some. I could not have done it without my mom and my husband’s support. They are the real MVP’s in all this. The salon we opened was actually one of the first salons that my aunt owned and my mom worked at 20+ years ago. Almost everything in the salon was exactly like it was when we were kids so I knew I had my work cut out for me. We opened in July of 2018 and have been prospering and growing ever since. I could not have done it without the support of my family, friends and my faith in the Lord!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t easy!! We pretty much did a total remodel all by ourselves and I struggled every day with the thought of failing and losing all this money we put into it. It was a lot of sleepless nights but my husband, family and friends kept reminding me that I would do great. My husband always said, “How do you know that you’ll fail if you never even try. What if you succeed?” His confidence made me confident.
Please tell us about Salon on Main.
The services we offer are waxing, makeup application, coloring, haircuts, extensions, eyelash extensions, and we recently added body sculpting. I’d say that I’m known for makeup and hair coloring. I love all things hair but makeup is truly a passion of mine. What we are most proud of is, the fact that our clients become our family. We love each and everyone of them. I guess that’s the perks of living in a small town!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t know if it’s my favorite but it’s definitely the funniest! My friend and I snuck off to the wax room at my mom’s salon. I some how convinced her to let me wax her eyebrows. Keep in mind we were probably 12 or 13 years old. Well, after I applied the wax, she decided she didn’t want to do it anymore and panicked. She smashed the wax into her eyebrow and then ripped it off. Long story short, we both got grounded from each other and she was missing half her eyebrow. A lesson was learned that day!
