Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Muccio.
Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a business degree, four children and a passion for early childhood education. After being in the classroom for many years and seeing many preschool classrooms transform into academic institutions, I wanted to create a special place where children could just play…use their imaginations and be creative. The footprint of our museums allows parents and caregivers to step back and let little ones have more independence and to engage in the activities they are most interested in. Our favorite quote is: “You can’t teach creativity, all you can do is let it blossom and it blossoms in play!” Peter Gray
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although Play Street Museum has had a tremendous response and has seen a lot of growth, it hasn’t come easy.
I have learned that starting a business is a lot of work…a lot of fun…but a lot of work. I eat, sleep and breathe Play Street. Luckily, we have a pretty good live-in focus group with our four kiddos. There is the occasional eye roll when I ask one too many questions and instantly know that it is time to stop talking about it! The life/family/business balance is tricky and I couldn’t agree more with Robert Herjavec, “If you’re expecting balance, don’t start a business.”
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Play Street Museum – what should we know?
Play Street Museum is an upscale, small format children’s museum. We currently have three corporate locations, Frisco, Plano & McKinney. Additionally, we have several franchisees that will be opening in the coming months. Although a lot of the elements are the same, each location has a different pretend play theme. Frisco is our Town Square complete with doctor’s office, fire department, bank, grocery store and a miniature Corner Bakery. Plano’s theme is Great Outdoors….kiddos can go fishing, stay in the lake house, pick up goods at the general store, or set up camp next to the fire pit. Our McKinney location is The Farm. Children enjoy pretending in the farmhouse, sandwich & ice cream shop, barn, hardware store and there is a life-sized cow they can milk. Each location has tons of blocks, arts & crafts, sensory activities, a museum exhibit! Our focus on educational activities sets us apart from other business that have opened using a similar concept.
We host open play during the week, where parents or caregivers bring their kiddos in to discover, imagine and explore. We offer private parties on the weekends and plan tons of special events for parents and children to enjoy together. We are known for quality, cleanliness, customer service.
I am most proud of our team! It is a hard job to maintain organization, keep guests happy, and ensure Play Street Museum is always clean!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination.
