Meet Cynthia Barnhouse of BarbedWire in Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Barnhouse.

Cynthia, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was fashion-obsessed from a very early age, I would go through my mother’s jewelry box, empty it and put on every single piece that I could fit. I would explore my parent’s closets and my sibling’s closets to find clothes to play dress up in. I have always enjoyed the creativity required to put together an interesting outfit, pair it with the right accessories for balance and of course, jewelry for a finished look.

Fast forward to a University degree in Studio Art, eight-year career in Beauty and Ready-to-Wear in London, UK, and an Assistant Buyer role at Forty-Five Ten in Dallas, TX. It was time for me to roll all of my experience into something of my own.

Founded in 2014, BarbedWire is an online jewelry boutique specializing in unique, modern fine jewelry by independent designers. This is my dream jewelry box and I love working with and supporting small businesses that practice sustainable design methods. My goal is for you to feel just as inspired as I do! Each collection is thoughtfully curated and the jewelry is hand-selected for its originality, quality and timelessness.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a small business requires a lot of thought and preparation and it can be month to month in terms of navigating the way forward. It’s not easy and I think you have to be emotionally invested in order to maintain a drive and focus. Staying on top of site performance, social media marketing, photoshoots, photo editing as well as travel are all things that keep me busy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a jewelry boutique owner, I spend a lot of time considering collections and editing collections to find just the right pieces that feel special and unique. It’s important to me to offer little stories that make sense and that the customer feels a point of view coming through in the way the pieces are presented.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great place to live and work. It’s incredibly easy to get around the city and amenities are convenient and affordable. It’s also a perfect home base for travel.
