Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Almonte.
Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began in Oakland California, I lived there up until I was 19 years old. My dream was to become a NBA star but turns out it was never my true destiny. Basketball never panned out the way I envisioned so I was left without an identity. As I turned 19, my parents decided to move to Texas to embark on a new journey. I was hesitant at first because Oakland was all I knew, but staying there and doing nothing was not an option. We moved to Arlington Texas and it was definitely a different world in comparison to California. It was hard to adjust at first but that was mainly because my heart was still back home. As I accepted that Texas was my new home, things became a bit easier.
From the age of 19-23, I hopped from job to job while also taking a college course here and there. I had no vision and there was nothing I was passionate about. My mother noticed how I was just going in a circle and had a talk with me. She believed I was meant to be a Massage Therapist because of what she seen from me as a teen. Whenever a family member was sore or hurting, I would be the one to help them. I never thought anything of it up until that point. I figured I had nothing to lose and shortly after enrolled in a 1-year massage therapy program. That one year would be the most trying time of my life but as I look back, I wouldn’t change a thing. My big brother passed away just a few months into the program and that shook my world up. Dealing with that while trying to balance school was the toughest thing I ever had to do.
By the end of the program, I found myself barely making it to the finish line. I missed so many classes that I was two absences away from being kicked out, but that wasn’t my destiny. I graduated and took my state board exam shortly after and I failed miserably. That sent me into a dark place for months and I didn’t know what my next move was. I kept talking myself out of retaking the exam and that was all fear based. I knew I had to live my life with love and eliminate fear If I wanted to turn this around and that’s exactly what I did. I studied my butt off and ended up passing, officially becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist. It’s been a year and a half since then and my life has took a dramatic change. I met a mentor with 20 years of corrective massage experience and she has given me so much knowledge. My first job was in a gym and that was the perfect environment for the type of work I wanted to do. By the time my one year anniversary as a Licensed Massage Therapist came, I was offered an opportunity to work for the Dallas Mavericks. Shortly after that, I started my own business, Evolution Corrective Bodywork. My life really came full circle.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Losing my brother, failing my state exam the first time were all big time blows in my life. I had to dig deep and really turn that pain into triumph. Those obstacles were meant to happen and they’ve molded me into the man I am today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Evolution Corrective Bodywork – what should we know?
Evolution Corrective Bodywork is my massage therapy business. When someone comes into my business for treatment, they can expect a session customized strictly for them. No human body is the same; we all have different aches/pains and imbalances. I use assessments, muscle testing and other corrective techniques to help people live a pain-free life. Being able to provide a service that brings so much value to others lives is what makes me most proud of what I do. With unwavering consistency and the results my clients get separates me from the pack.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would have never made it this far without certain people placed in my path during this journey. My mother (Willa) and father (Jose) for raising me and never giving me any handouts. I had to earn everything and that makes me appreciate everything so much more. My brothers (Darrell) who passed away and (Isaiah) deserve so much credit as well. They always made sure their little brother was good and never let me make the same mistakes that they did. Will always love them for that. My mentor (Carolyn) who has given me so much of her knowledge from over the years. Whether it be massage related or personal, her guidance helped me big time. Also, my best friend/girlfriend (Bryn) who came into my life when I needed her most. She has been nothing but a light in my life and supported me throughout this whole process.
Last but not least, my godmother (Maria). She is practically my 2nd mom because she treated me like her son. That is the strongest woman I have ever met and everyone else knew it as well. She always made sure I showed respect to everyone at all times and kept me on the right path. She has dementia now and doesn’t remember me but my heart feels good knowing I haven’t let her down.
