Meet Daniel McDowell and Mikel Lawrence of Tache Coffee Company in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel McDowell and Mikel Lawrence.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Tache Coffee Company is a small-batch specialty coffee roastery based in McKinney, Texas. Though we don’t have our own Coffee shop yet, you can find our offerings on our website and several various markets and coffee shops around DFW. We founded the business in late 2016 with a 3 kilo U.S. Roaster Corp gas drum roaster, an e-commerce website, and a lot of passion. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to create something that people could connect with, we wanted to roast coffee that everyone would enjoy, and we wanted to support other small and local business.

When it comes to our coffee beans, we look for distributors and farmers. You’re passionate about their coffee and also care about their communities and people. We are also oddly passionate about facial hair and have competed and placed in several facial hair competitions in Texas. Tache is actually slanged for mustache and you’ll absolutely notice the prominent different mustaches and each of our bags. We couldn’t have made it this far without the support our local coffee community and all of our die-hard fans. We are rapidly outgrowing our faithful 3-kilo roaster; we are looking to the Future.

We are Thankful for all of our local coffee shops and partners who feature and serve Tache in their customers and employees. Our goal and vision is to one day open the doors to Tache coffee shop & roastery and can’t wait to connect even more folks in our community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One thing is for sure It’s certainly been a wild ride and we have learned a lot along the way. We try not to stress out over the small hurdles and we remind each other to have fun.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tache Coffee Company story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a small-batch speciality coffee roaster and former competitive facial hair growers. Our brand is synonymous for its signature mustache. You will frequently find us at regional and national Facial Hair competitions and every December we’ll be hanging out in Fort Worth with our friends at the North Texas Beard Alliance, where they host DecemBeard facial hair competition. We roast coffee that we everyone to enjoy, we love it when people tell us it is the first coffee they could drink without cream and they didn’t know coffee could taste so good. It takes multiple sample batches to get each roast to perfection but it’s all worth the effort.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has definitely played a part in building our company. It was luck that mike at I met at a facial hair competition in Ft Worth on that December day in 2018. Had we not met at that competition, Tache would not be what it is today. Being connected to our communities has helped our business grow, we are lucky to have been connected with some truly awesome people who have really helped our business take off in the right direction.
