Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaine Candeloro.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Inanna was founded in 2006 by Jean Sala Smith, a Certified Nurse Midwife with a passion for women’s health. It was created as a safe place for women to birth outside of the hospital. Using the midwifery model of care, which nurtures the physical, psychological, and social well-being of women, Inanna midwives have helped empower women to trust their bodies in childbirth.
Forging relationships with other health and wellness experts has enabled our midwives to take root in Denton and provide comprehensive care that our clients trust. Today, Inanna midwives have helped to welcome 1525 (and counting!) babies into the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the challenges we face is maintaining the charm and historical significance of a building that is over 100 years old. Our clients are drawn to the original features of the birth center, as well as the elegance and homelike atmosphere that is difficult to find in hospitals. We aim to retain the appeal of serene setting while keeping the building up to date from a medical perspective.
Inanna Birth & Women’s Care – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Inanna Birth & Women’s Care is a full service, freestanding birthing center. Owned, staffed and run by Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), we offer a variety of services to care for women across the lifespan, including well woman, family planning, pregnancy, and hormone therapy.
Certified Nurse Midwives are the most professionally educated classification of Midwives, having completed Registered Nurse training and a further Masters or Doctoral level degree in midwifery. This uniquely qualifies the CNM to care for women throughout their adult lives, but especially in pregnancy and childbirth. The CNM has the training and authority to diagnose problems and prescribe medications for medical issues before, during, and after pregnancy.
The midwives at Inanna are passionate about the transformation that women undergo as they enter motherhood. We nurture the whole woman, from the physical changes to the emotional and spiritual journey that is made during this sacred event. Throughout the course of the pregnancy, we help women uncover their hidden strengths so that they feel empowered to give birth. There is no greater joy than the look of pride from a new mother saying, “I did it!”
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Several months ago I earned a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP), which emphasizes evidence-based practices to achieve high-quality patient outcomes. Achieving a terminal degree has been a long-term goal of mine, and it has been an uphill battle realizing this dream.
I have seven wonderful children, and while they have been my biggest cheerleaders, it has also been a challenge to juggle family, education, and career commitments. I love that I can show my children that hard work brings success, and I’m excited to see what this additional education can do for the birth center.
