Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Bragg.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I feel like I have always had an eye for photography and would constantly take pictures growing up of literally everything. I went to school to originally become a Veterinarian but I think I was too emotional to be able to handle that so I changed my major to Art, something I always loved. I have a Masters in Art so photography seemed to just fit. Currently I have been doing photography for about 7 years on and off until a few years ago when I felt like it was my calling. Now I do work as a teacher as well so I stay pretty busy, but being able to capture someone’s special day, memories and families that they will cherish forever just makes me the most happy. Also being a mom I get to use my talents to capture my son’s life through the lens. There is something special about getting to see people in love regularly and how they commit themselves to each other or being able to see a family in their natural state just having fun while taking their pictures. As a teacher I teach Art and photography so I feel blessed to be able to incorporate the things I love in my daily life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not always, sometimes I feel discouraged because you constantly compare yourself to others who are doing the same thing as you do. You might not have as many clients that month or you are so busy that you feel like your drowning. I always have to remind myself that I am enough and that I am super blessed also to not compare myself because God made me who I am. Another struggle is probably the editing part, as much as you want to finish someone’s wedding, portraits, family pictures and any other session in one day or a few hours it just might not be possible. I like to take my time and really consider each photograph I am editing which takes time. So being a wife, mom, teacher, coach, and photographer take a lot of time each day.
Emily Bragg Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
With my business, Emily Bragg Photography, I specialize in wedding, engagement, family, portrait, and event photography, Weddings take up a lot of my time because they are the biggest job and take everything from engagements to details of each decoration. With my business I really like to get to know something about the client and what makes them who they are. Their love story, how they met, something interesting about their family or what’s their favorite things. Most of my clients are usually friends or family but then the ones that I meet for the first time end up being friends. I love being able to keep up with my clients and their lives after because it more than just a service, it’s a relationship.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me success is personal and if you are happy with what you are doing and you are feeling like you are getting something out of what you do is being successful. The things I look out for are quality over quantity. It’s not so much of how many shoots you’re getting but how many are you truly invested in.
