Meet Javier Elizalde of Elizalde Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Elizalde.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I worked in TV in Mexico as a scriptwriter and camera assistant. I always had my camera with me, even offset, because my passion is visual arts, specifically photography. When I moved to the States, I discovered the style and techniques of the American market and I realized how much I love capturing real moments, such as those of a wedding. From then on, I worked to develop my craft as a photographer – from the techniques of the camera to lighting and connecting with people.

I learned photography with film so I understand the importance of only one click, only one exposure, and the implications that photo can have for each person. When I had the opportunity to shoot my first wedding, I was really nervous because I know how important those moments are for the couple and the family. I didn’t have much gear or experience but out of respect for my craft and the couple, I worked hard to capture the joy of the day. It’s been almost seven years since that wedding and I still enjoy creating new photos for my clients. I don’t like repeating the same images over and over, I like to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. Lately, I’ve been doing South Asian weddings, which has allowed me to be creative with my style.

It’s been a long road of learning but I think the most important thing about my photography is it’s not about me, my camera nor my gear. It’s the relationship I can build with my clients so I can capture who they really are and connect their emotions with my photography.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Photography is a marathon; there’s always something new to learn, to improve, and to study. Technology is moving quickly. Cameras used to be less accessible. Now anyone can buy a camera or the newest gear so the market is more competitive. There’s more opportunity to improve ourselves every day with creative inspiration. The challenge is: do you want to take a picture or do you want to capture the moment?

Please tell us about Elizalde Photography.
Elizalde Photography exists to connect with people to create and capture moments in their lives. I specialize in wedding photography both in Western and South Asian cultures. I think what most clients notice about me is my relationship and connection with them from behind the camera. I hear a lot of feedback about how I made them feel more relaxed and confident during our time together. Combining this relationship with my experience with lighting and composition has allowed me to deliver photographs that represents a joyful time in the life of my clients. I’m proud to see how people connect with my images and get excited to think “that could be me!”

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Something I think about a lot is changing the name of my company because it’s hard for many people to say. But after 7 years as “Elizalde Photography” I believe you remember the company for the experience and the quality, not for the name.
