Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Ann Lowe.
Judy Ann, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a retired teacher of the Talented and Gifted program in the Dallas Independent School District. I retired in 2017 with 50 years of teaching. I began writing children’s stories in 2012 at the age of 68 and published my first book in 2013. All of the stories are based on true experience.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This new journey has been an inspiring challenge that has opened new opportunities in numerous ways. The hardest thing for me sometimes is to motivate myself to keep going. And having the courage and confidence in myself, that I can do this, that I have another story in me. Sometimes I have to say “You can do this! You taught school for 50 years, you can do this!”
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My stories are inspiring, motivating and uplifting for children of all ages and adults as well. My books have received multiple awards and I am proud of the recognition and positive feedback from parents, teachers, other authors, and librarians.
One of my stores, MJ’s New Friend, has been well received because of the message within the story to help children realize that they can have a friendship with someone who is different from them and that friendship will be a special gift to last a lifetime. Counselors have utilized this story when they address the issue of bullying and acceptance.
My first story, The Little White Light, has won several awards and been featured in churches and spiritual bookstores around the country. It has been praised as a book that encourages children to find their own spiritual guides.
I have read my books at Ronald McDonald House, the Scottish Rite Hospital, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital and other institutions where they bring comfort to children struggling with life-threatening disease and loss of a loved one.
I have participated in numerous Career Day events in the Dallas /Ft Worth metroplex where I talked with the children about reading, creative writing, the story of my stories, and following with a Q&A time with the students. The principals, counselors and teachers were very excited about my presentation and my presence with the students.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In this challenging world we live in today, I hope that my children’s stories enrich the lives of children of all ages and bring comfort and enlightenment to their daily lives and that my stories will become a treasure that they will read over and over again at any age.
