Today we’d like to introduce you to K.B. Berry.
K.B., please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in North Omaha, NE where the opportunities were limited. I come from a musical family so music has always been an optional outlet for me. My mom used to sing and can play the clarinet and flute well and I have a relative who was a well-known Jazz and Blues musician in Saint Louis by the name of David Dee. He inspired me and proved to me that you could make a living out of the music business. Growing up, I was involved with the school choir, orchestra and band. Throughout middle school and high school, I drummed for the Bethelite Steppers drill team, where I was able to showcase my talents as a percussionist. That triggered my desire to beat making/producing. I continued the drill team throughout high school until I found myself getting into trouble and not putting the focus on my passion as much as I should have. I was becoming a product of my environment, so I attended Job Corps in 2010 to get focused and separate from the rising violence and lack of resources in my hometown. There, I would travel to the local college to record with a friend/ engineer by the name of Marty Lastovica in his dorm room. I finished my first project and sold it on campus. We knew I had something people liked then, so I wanted to figure out how to make it an actual business and turn this dream into a reality. I began pursuing music as an Artist, where I found myself getting paid for gigs with the help of my manager Tyler Beene and traveling to do shows and Charity Events at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Chadron State University and other surrounding colleges and venues throughout Nebraska.
With minimal success from the artistry standpoint, I wanted to have a larger impact and hold longevity to make this successful, so I attended audio school at The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, AZ in 2014-2015. Soon after, I received an internship with the Artist Refinery in Phoenix, AZ. In 2016, I moved back to my hometown, where I freelanced audio engineered out of two recording studios and worked with local artists from songwriting to production. In 2018, I decided to bring my skill set to Dallas, TX where I quickly landed a position as an Audio Engineer at Mogul Medias Studios. Currently, I am a lead engineer and music producer at G5ive Studios. Dallas has presented me with more opportunities to expand and grow as I continue to build in the music industry. I have worked with many artists such as YLA, MCM Pluto, Fat Yunginn, JR Patton, A.Y.B, KushPackCris, Mr. Lucci, SpotEmGotEm, BG Lonnie Bands, Scotty ATL, Lil Twist and many more.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Anything that anyone is building on their own from the ground up will face many struggles. There was a point where I was homeless and finding my way from one couch to another, worked many different jobs, faced many deaths of family and friends, facing humility and doubts and made many mistakes along the way. I have dealt with many challenges and at times it would discourage me from pursuing my passion for music and goals, but I was firm in making music my career work and prosper despite all trials and tribulations I faced.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
MixedByKB is my brand as an Audio Engineer. I represent quality sound recordings. I feel that every artist deserves to make the best record that they can make every time they are in the studio and should have the best experience as well. Unlike some engineers, I like to guide and give my input to Artists. Many engineers may not offer that. I work with a team of talented Producers/Audio Engineers/Songwriters at G5ive Studios. We are a one stop shop that provides Artist Development. We offer Studio Recording, Audio Recording packages, Beat Production, Podcasting, Videography, Photography, Commercials, Voiceovers, Audio Books and much more.
I am most proud that I can bring people together musically and being able to work with a team of credible Producers who all present different production styles that will fit the needs of our clients. I can help artists find their sound. Help them build their confidence and put out quality work. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I offer pre-production meetings that give the client and me an idea of the style of music the artist aspires to create, their background and talents. I feel that this is a way to give the artist an insight of what’s to come once deciding to pursue their careers. I also host an event called The Producer Cook Up to bring different talents under one roof to network and create with one another.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas, TX is a great place to become an entrepreneur and to start a business. It has unlimited opportunities in many aspects. If someone were starting, I would recommend them to start with a vision, develop a plan, implement it, and always to do good business. Most importantly, always be willing to learn new things and take criticism.
