Today we’d like to introduce you to Ka’Mesha Cathcart.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Never in one million years did I ever expect to find a passion for doing hair. I had always felt like my heart belonged to the fashion industry in which I had worked high-end retail since I was 16. Three years ago, a friend of mines showed me a style via social media and told me to try it out on her. Jokingly, I did. I posted my work on my Facebook page with the caption, “I don’t do hair so don’t ask.” The very next morning, I woke up to see that my post had been viewed 1 million times along with a few inquires about appointments in my inbox. Out of curiosity about my new found talent, I began to take on clients. Through the love and support of my boyfriend, I had become good enough to quit my 9-5, actually see what I really could be, and from there everything took off.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Surprisingly, everything has been smooth sailing. The hardest part about starting a new business was actually starting it. I found that the more I sat and thought with no action the more I was wasting time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Braids By Ka’Mesha story. Tell us more about the business.
Braids by Ka’Mesha is a luxury braiding service. I specialize in technique braiding such as stitched braids, tribal braids, box braids and lemonade braids. I am most proud of building a strong and loyal clientele in such a short amount of time. Speaking to other stylists it took them six-plus years of experience where it only took me 2 with no background in cosmetology. What sets me apart from most stylist is understanding that my client’s time is just as valuable as my time. I am never late starting anyone’s appointment. Luckily, my background in customer service allows me to fully service my clients to the best of my abilities from the moment they walk-in and well after they leave.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck has played a role in my business at all. A man that doesn’t work doesn’t eat. I work hard.
