Meet Katherine Lopez of Sweet August Events in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Lopez.

Katherine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always said I fell into this job but I do believe I was destined to do something of this nature. Out of College I went to work at a small financial company and worked in the Marketing Department. Not my job’s fault, but I was miserable. I played soccer my whole life (even through college) and I just used to being social and loved working on teams. I started my Event Career at a Venue (learned everything I possibly could), left there to work for a Design/Event Company as their planner and then decided it was time to just jump and start my own company in 2011. I was so fortunate to have wonderful mentors and great support from our industry. I honestly have not looked back and I eagerly try to learn to be better every year.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is smooth when you are trying to build something…I mean that is what makes everything so much sweeter right. When I first started I struggled with how alone I felt building this dream job. It was just lonely and I felt very isolated. It, by all means, is not a traditional job. Strange hours, working all the time, dreaming all the time and constantly TALKING…it can be exhausting. I also was a young mom while I was doing all this. Balancing was just something I had to learn fast or I was going to suffer in one area. I still struggle with this because I love my job. I love to serve others and I love processes.

Please tell us about your your work.
Wow, this is hard. I mean there are so many great companies out there but I think what sets us apart as Planners/Designers is our ability to build relationships with our clients and vendors. We truly are such warm people who care. Weird right…I mean most people care about their jobs but for us….we find ourselves so immersed in our client’s lives during one of their life-changing events….that’s pretty special. I also feel like with Design we really just turn our wheels to make each event feel so personable to each couple.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
This question really comes at a difficult time in my life. I should go back and answer that question about struggles. In April of this year, I lost my father….my number one fan. Running a business that you love and feeds your family while you try to grieve is something very STRANGE, HARD, DIFFERENT…but it is a season and it too shall pass. My favorite memory from childhood was being hoisted up on my dad’s shoulders after scoring three goals. I was five years old and that memory just stuck.
