Meet Kathleen House of Red Barn Studio and Art Classes in Double Oak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen House.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kathleen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born in 1950. I grew up loving art. The first memory regarding art was drawing an Indian headdress with crayons on my Grandmother’s front porch in Ponca City, OK. She was a loving and positive woman. After age five, my life changed. Moved to Anthony, KS. I never had art classes in school. I only had music, which I loved and was inspired by. However, when I entered College at Kansas State University in 1968, I thought to myself, “I want to major in Art!” I did and also received my Masters in Art Ed in 1991 from Texas Women’s University. So many years later, I have been an art teacher, art education business owner and visual artist. And still am! What a great life I have.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggles were growing up after age five in a bit of a rough environment. However, my Sr year in High School, I met the love of my life. We went on to college together. Have two grown, talented daughters and three amazingly loving and talented grandchildren. Life is good! My husband and I have been married and happy for 51 years and we like to say our life has been a roller coaster.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
After many years of being in the art world, majoring in Art Education, teaching in private and public schools, owning art education businesses, working in my art studio and now I feel so fortunate to have my Red Barn Studio and Art Classes space and business, life is good.

I am proud of the fact that my art students that have attended classes in my red barn are so touched by our property and their learning experiences. Many have said that it is such a special place.

What were you like growing up?
I was friendly. Creative. Ventured outside with friends. Loved my experience with Girl Scouts from 1st grade through High School. I was strong. The girls in our gs troop of ten girls would only ask me to kill the spiders. No problem. I loved collecting rocks. I was motivated and inspired by my music instructors. Band, piano and vocal.

I was able to go inside our beautiful Methodist church by myself and play the grand piano in the sanctuary. Such good memories.
