Meet Keundra Johnson of LaShais Hair Boutique in East Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keundra Johnson.

Keundra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had long hair, I didn’t start wearing hair extensions until I was in 8th grade. It wasn’t the fact that I didn’t like my hair just at that point it was a lot to maintain so I wanted to try something, something I didn’t have to do to much work to I could just get up and go. That is when I first started wearing extensions and haven’t stopped since. If you ask my friends in highschool would I have ever started a business, they would have probably said no. After high school, I attended PV. I wasn’t able to get financial aid and felt bad for my parents having to pay out of pocket, so I decided to come back home. I’m always looking at different ways to make money and one day my mom was like well you like wearing extensions why don’t you sell hair extensions. So, I used all the money I had saved up to start LaShais Hair Boutique and from there I was able to expand my business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been easy. I struggled with sales at first, I didn’t receive my first sale until three months after I opened my business. I really didn’t know how to market my products and get people to shop online. But I kept pushing watching entrepreneur YouTube videos taking advice from other business people and never gave up.

LaShais Hair Boutique – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
LaShais Hair Boutique specializes in hair extensions, but we also sell lashes, lipgloss and offer wholesale. We are known for our hair extensions. As a company, I’m most proud of the fact that since I have been doing this awhile and I know a lot of different information that I’m able to help other black-owned businesses prosper and grow doesn’t matter if you sell the same thing I do. It is enough money out in the world for everyone to eat.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is when I don’t have to work my 9-5 anymore sitting on the beach drinking a mimosa. Don’t have to worry about any bills. And mainly just to be able to travel and give my son the world without money being a problem.
