Meet Kevin Fides, a Freelance Photographer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Fides.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first started photography through my friends Saffa and Marwa who would just take photos for fun everytime we hung out. Eventually, I joined them. I got hooked immediately and so for four years straight, I would take pictures every day with my phone. Two years ago, got my first DSLR and it completely changed my outlook on photography. In a way, it made me more infatuated with photography because I was able to do more with my pictures. A year after getting my camera, I decided my photos lacked a human element and so I decided to get into portraiture. At first, it was quite daunting because I didn’t know how to ask anyone to take pictures of them without getting cold feet. One day, I decided to suck it up and asked my now friend, Mia and immediately I became obsessive with portraiture. I would watch all the YouTube videos and read my favorite magazines just to get inspiration for all my shoots and eventually, I started styling my own shoots as well and so that’s how my obsession with fashion photography came to be and thus, through that, I discovered that I wanted to get into fashion photography.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a very tough road. My first DSLR was stolen and so it put me in a rut for a month before I could get a new one. After that happened, I decided to push myself more creatively but it never worked out because I was too focused on the perfection of the photograph. School is one big obstacle right now, as I have to split my focus between photography and my education. It is very hard to thrive in one when your focus is not on one thing. Lastly, transportation; I don’t have a car right now and so planning a shoot can be quite expensive for me if it’s out of the city I live in.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in lifestyle and fashion photography. I like to include movement and a feeling on my photos. I’m most proud of the fact that I have a style most people are able to recognize.
