Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Armstrong.
Kimberly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a kid, I always loved taking pictures of people, my polaroid was my favorite, getting to see the immediate results was always so much fun. I discovered photography as more than just taking fun pictures and capturing memories when I was 18. I graduated high school and had no idea what I was going to do “when I grew up” and now seemed like that time to figure that out. I needed to take an elective and picked photography because I had always enjoyed taking pictures and figured it would be an easy class. I fell in LOVE! I received my Associates of Art in photography. I began trying to figure out how to take my knowledge and create a career out of it.
I shot weddings for five years, but due to the onset of chronic migraines, my ability to spend long days photographing suddenly came to a halt. I continued to photograph here and there, most of my kids or friends kids or their families. I did some senior sessions here and there. About 3 or 4 years ago, I had a friend that was going through a divorce and asked me if I would doing boudoir pictures for her. She was looking to reconnect with herself as a single woman. I immediately started researching as I had never done a session of this type before. I came across so many amazing photographers and began watching and learning as fast as I could.
One of those photographers was Molly Marie, she has changed the course of my business and life. She has created a program for boudoir photographers to receive higher education and become a certified specialist in the field of boudoir. As of August 2019, I am a certified boudoir photographer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey over the past 20 plus years has been anything but smooth. I have had to deal with creating a successful business while being a single mom living with chronic migraines. At times, I have had to put my business and its growth on hold to take an outside job to support my family. Growth becomes slower when life is occupied by work and kids and going through a divorce. I have never given up though on my dream.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a certified boudoir photographer. I specialize in boudoir because I think it’s important that women have that connection with who they are, outside of being a mom or wife, daughter and friend. I love the empowerment it brings to my clients when they see themselves through my lens. When the know that no matter their age or weight, they are beautiful now, in the body they are in and that it should be celebrated.
I think being a certified boudoir photographer is what sets me apart from other photographers in my area. It shows my clients that not only am I continually learning to improve my craft I am also always ready to take my business to the next level to provide them the absolute best in customer service and high-quality products. I am also very proud of this for my business and for myself personally.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very studious kid, a perfectionist if you will. I was always studying because making straight A’s was very important to me. If I wasn’t studying, then you would find me with a book in my hand or at the movies. I also love to crotchet. Creating seems to be something in my blood.
