Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinsey Gibson.
Kinsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was thirteen years old, I bought my first camera at a Black Friday Sale. It was a Canon Rebel T5. I had always taken photos on my iPod touch, but I wanted something more. Once I purchased the camera, I quickly started a photography account on Instagram for my photos. It is called “kinslens”- which I still use today! During my sophomore year, I took a photography class at a fine arts school. I learned about composition, manual settings, color theory and more. The teacher assigned various projects to help us better understand the concepts. After that class, I decided I wanted to pursue photography. I am now 17, and I have shot weddings, family photos, newborns, senior portraits, and events. I am still using the camera I originally bought four years ago. For the past year, I have been saving money to purchase a new camera, and I am almost to my goal!
My favorite type of photos is portraits. I love to incorporate color theory and rules of composition to highlight the personality of each subject.
My goal is to have a successful business that allows me to serve people as I capture their special moments.
I have a passion for photography. I can’t wait to see where this passion leads me!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road except for two things. Equipment and age-discrimination. When I first started, I did not have my own laptop. Thankfully, I was able to save enough money to purchase one last year. I am using a camera that limits me. This has caused stress in moments where my camera cannot handle the lighting situation. The second area is age discrimination. I have experienced disrespect that is based on my age. Some people see a teenage girl and assume that she is inexperienced and uneducated. Neither is true. And that can be frustrating.
Please tell us about kinslens.
I am a photographer who specializes in portraits. I shoot in natural light settings around the golden hour. This lighting creates a soft and beautiful effect which captures a sense of authenticity. Many young photographers lack experience and education. What sets me apart is that I have pursued education and I have taken advantages of opportunities to build my experience!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I waited a year after buying my camera to start my classes. If I could go back in time, I would’ve jumped into the education side of photography sooner!
