Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Booth.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I started using art as a way to get out the emotions that were swirling around in my mind. It kept me sane, gave me time to breathe – an escape. There’s a lot of vulnerability behind the bright colors and wispy brush strokes. As a self-taught artist, I’ve spent countless hours trying to figure out how to get what was in my mind onto the canvas. I started painting for family and friends which later grew to larger commissions for restaurants and businesses. Through a variety of different jobs, I started to find a true passion for abstract expressionism. I often find myself waking up in the middle of the night with a specific combination of colors and movements that I have to get out. That’s typically how many of my pieces start and eventually transform into a life of their own. It’s this relentless passion that has taken me on my journey to where I am today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, it’s been as smooth as sandpaper! I think I speak for many artists and creatives when I say that it’s never a smooth road. The biggest struggle has been within me and that little thing called perfectionism. When I was younger, I let those insecurities take up more space inside my mind than I should have. Today, I approach my art with mindfulness. Instead of letting negativity hinder my hands from creating, I take those feelings and channel them onto the canvas.
Alright – so let’s talk about your art. Tell us about being an artist – what should we know?
I am a commissioned painter with a love for abstract expressionism. That being said, I don’t limit myself to one particular style. I know this will be a lifelong journey where I’ll continue to evolve, grow and learn. I could go into specific pieces that I am proud of, but really what it all boils down to is the fact that I have taken a passion and turned it into so much more.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence is key. If I gave in whenever I faced a challenge, time crunch, or listened to those tiny voices that tell you to give up, I would not be here today talking about art. When you find the one thing that brings you joy, you pursue it. You can’t stop.
