Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Phillips.
Kyle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
During an internship at a studio downtown, I met prolific voice actor Christopher R. Sabat. After recording him for a commercial, he suggested I apply at Funimation. That was March 2008. I started on there as an audio engineer. I quickly got behind the microphone doing background voices and bit parts. At the same time, I got more interested in another position: Voice Director. After assistant directing for a couple of years, I made a move to full-time Director in early 2015. At the same time, my voice acting career was slowly building steam, with my most popular casting being in the massive hit My Hero Academia as Denki Kaminari.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a mostly smooth journey. The biggest struggles came early on in my career at Funimation because I was only 21 when I started! Twenty-one year-old rarely know what’s best for them!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a voice director, I’m charged with researching a show, casting the voice actors, reviewing the scripts, and directing the actors in their roles. Then I review the episode when it’s all done. I’m known for taking chances on newer talent and putting veteran talent in unique roles. As a voice actor, I act! I get behind the mic and work with a director to deliver what they want.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
DFW has a GREAT theater scene and lots of voiceover opportunities. With a great marketing presence and a lot of business headquarters located here as well, getting consistent work in commercial, radio, and other acting ventures is easier than in most parts of the country.
