Meet LeKeytha Dukes of Back to My Roots in Del City

Today we’d like to introduce you to LeKeytha Dukes.

LeKeytha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Back to My Roots started back in April 2013 when I made the decision to cut off my relaxed hair. After my first look at myself, I was instantly excited to the point I said, aloud, “I’m Back to My Roots!” After that, I made a shirt for myself and quickly realized that this was much more than a shirt. This was the beginning of my calling to my community, who for so long have felt voiceless to the rest of the world as we were being left speechless at what was happening to us. So from there, I decided to ‘say it with a shirt for the culture’ and Back to My Roots has been making clothing and accessories with positive and awareness messages ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, it has been a smooth road with just a few bumps but nothing major.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Back to My Roots – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Back to My Roots Clothing is a T-shirt and accessory line dedicated to giving our customers a voice, encouraging them to, “Say It With A Shirt”. One of the things we specialize in is providing on-trend, high-quality clothing and accessories that cater to OUR customer’s needs, consistently. Our clothing can be gifted to your grandparents, given to your children at graduation or worn to Turn Up without missing a beat.

We are known for being aware of our communities needs and often using our brand and everyone’s love of a good shirt with a story to mobilize solutions through sales. These sales campaigns have successfully purchased headphones and instruments for needy local elementary classrooms and drives for clothes, shoes, and toiletries so every baby within my view can learn with confidence.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I had the opportunity to collaborate with quite a few of our local creatives during our most recent fashion show. It was then that I really discovered I have a love for design outside of shirts and our customers want it. So our next move is a line focused more on fashion for different occasions and definitely more than shirts. I see skirts and dresses, rompers, blazers, jeans, etc. That stays true to what our brand has been built on but allows me to get creative for my people.
