Today we’d like to introduce you to Magan McKittrick.
Magan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After high school, I made the move out to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech to study psychology. Once I got there, I panicked and realized; what 18 years old is supposed to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives?! So, I changed my major to undecided, spent one semester out west and quickly decided to come back home and enroll in cosmetology school; a dream I had had since I was 13 years old.
I graduated cosmetology school in 2010, at 20 years old, I quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing. Still. We’ll fast forward through the couple of years of random retail and receptionist jobs, where I finally find my niche in hairstyling (blowouts/event styling). I worked in a blow-dry bar for a few years and then decided to take on the wedding industry on my own as a freelance artist. I still had no clue what I was doing, but as time went on, people kept getting referred to me and I found myself as a working artist, specializing in bridal. I eventually took on the title of makeup artist as well, with the help of so many amazing artists who gladly helped me learn and grow my skill from the ground up.
I’ve now been in the industry for a short five or six years, specializing in weddings, and work as a freelance artist for myself and also as a part of the Erin Blair Hair and Makeup team out of Mckinney, Texas.
As much as I love being a part of the industry, I also have felt a calling elsewhere, on my life and have most recently joined the blogger community, as The Hometown Blonde. Where it looks like my main purpose is to grow a following based off of my taste in fashion, my hearts wish is that it goes much deeper than that. While I believe in and love all things beauty, I want to help women understand and find their true self-worth.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road.
I have never considered myself the BEST at what I do. I am always at an understanding that there is more to learn and just as in anything else in life; there is always someone better, someone more experienced, someone with a better following than you. That can be discouraging, but you have to remind yourself to look back and see how far you’ve come.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Hometown Blonde // Magan Nicole Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
Magan Nicole Beauty is the name I use as a freelance hair and makeup artist, and I specialize in weddings and events.
The Hometown Blonde is the name I operate under in the “blogger” world, which I still don’t consider myself to be able to use that term, but it is what it is! It’s just a baby blog, but what I hope will set me apart, in the future, is my heart to help women feel understood and related to in all of life’s struggles, I want to help build their confidence not only by what they’re wearing or what their hair looks like but from a soul place.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
This question actually makes me laugh because I am just about the UN-luckiest person there is. If something odd or weird happens, it’s a running joke that, “that WOULD happen to me!”
So, in short; luck has not played a role in my personal life or in my professional life.
