Meet Maggie Wells of Bluebonnet Birth Services in DFW Metroplex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Wells.

Maggie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Doula Journey started after art school when I got into nursing school. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with that career path, what field to be in. I thought, “If I could be anything in the world, I would want to be a Midwife.” While I was doing some googling on how to become a Midwife, I found the word “Doula” and dove in headfirst. THIS is what I was made for. I dropped out of nursing school in 2016, took a Birth Doula training, read book after book, found a local Doula who let me shadow her (Sarah DiMarco, thank you!) and I have been a Doula ever since and Bluebonnet Birth Services was born!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle is yourself. Only you can choose to hold yourself back or make the leap. The average “life-span” of a Doula is two years and I think that is because Doulas typically don’t have a business degree, marketing training, website building skills, etc. If you keep saying, “I can’t,” then you never will. I learned from other Doulas, webinars, and YouTube. It is challenging but not impossible!

We’d love to hear more about Bluebonnet Birth Services.
I’ve added more and more skills to my Birth Worker Tool Box over the years. In addition to being a Birth Doula, I’m a Postpartum Doula, Newborn Care Specialist, Placenta Encapsulation Specialist, Hypnobirthing Educator, and Spinning Babies Educator. I also offer belly binding, belly henna, and belly life casting which allows me to incorporate my artistic side into my Birth Work. I teach an immediate postpartum and newborn care class at East Dallas Birth and Wellness called “The First 48”. I’m proud that I hosted the Denton Doula Meet-Up before the COVID-19 pandemic, which I hope to start doing again soon.

Each Doula has a different set of skills and a vibe to offer. I bring education, laughs, and support to each of my meetings with every client and every type of Birth Plan.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I’m at birth and I see my client step into their power after all of the education and preparation we have done, making informed decisions, and birthing their baby, then they look at me and say, “Thank you, I couldn’t have done that without you.” and I say “Yes, yes you could have.”
