Meet Mark Lyon of Green Thumb Landscaping

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Lyon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always done landscape work. I grew up with it, having landscaped my parents’ new home at the age of 14.

However, after years in the news business, I got out and began Green Thumb Landscaping in 2003 with the help of my wife, Dawn, and sons Brandon, Casey and Austin.

We grew each year in both revenue and capabilities. Soon we began doing extensive hardscape work in combination with our landscapes and took on some incredible challenges along the way. We also had a seven-year run with a large corporate client soon after we became established.

We offer landscape, hardscape, water features, decorative ponds/waterfalls, patios in all types of mediums, chemical lawn services, organic lawn services, lawn and landscape maintenance as well as landscape design and installation.

Green Thumb had opportunities to become a large landscape company. For several years, we offered landscape services in Austin in addition to our DFW business. We also performed some projects in East Texas and Houston. Last year that ended as our DFW market became too active to justify going to Austin any longer.

Staying smaller has provided benefits that might otherwise be lost, such as the one-on-one contact with clients and the relationships that evolve with our customers.

In addition to our business duties, I have written a monthly landscape column for about 10 years which gives homeowners advice and tips on what to do in their landscapes each month.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting up was tough. We began Green Thumb right in the middle of a season when most folks have already selected their landscape service provider. So it was tough during that time. Thankfully, my wife, Dawn and her business were able to keep us afloat that first year.

Additionally, we decided in 2012 to be more residential landscape focused. We parted ways with a large corporate client so that we could dedicate more of our resources to the residential side of our business. We very much enjoy the opportunities for creativeness that a residential landscape provides. Making the transition from being almost half-corporate in our business to more residential was challenging for several months.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Green Thumb Landscaping story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a residential and commercial landscape company. We specialize in designing, creating new landscapes and hardscape. We also perform traditional landscape maintenance.

We feel our service and approach set us apart. We treat people like we like to be treated. We do not actively advertise so our results are more or less our marketing via word of mouth. So we have to be good to continue business. Our goal is smiling, happy customers once a project is completed.

Communication is also a feature that sets us apart. We are both timely and thorough in our communication with clients and are digitally savvy in that regard.

What I am most proud of would be the relationships we create through our work. I really enjoy the interaction with them and feel gratified when they come back to me for more projects. Their satisfaction at the end of each project inspires us.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I really can’t say. I’ve never been much of a believer in luck. I think those who prepare and ready themselves will have the most success in life so I’ve always tried to be on the right side of that.

But rather than luck, I think the dedication of this company to God and the goal to glorify him though our work might be a more appropriate way of putting it for us.
