Meet Megan Wilkes of Emporium Pies

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Wilkes.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Maypearl, Texas (South of Dallas) and went to college in Oklahoma City and I got my degree in Interior Design. In 2010 I moved back to Dallas and I really wanted to work with more people on an interpersonal level than I was at my office interior design job. While I enjoyed the creative outlet of designing and building spaces, I rarely had the opportunity to spend time in those spaces or to enjoy the experience of those spaces with the people who used them.

When I lived in Oklahoma City, I hosted friends for dinner parties several nights a week and I knew that I loved practicing hospitality, I also love a delicious pie. After a little research, I saw that Dallas was lacking a dedicated pie shop, so I set out to find a business partner who would help me start a pie shop where folks could come in and feel like they are at home.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles when you are starting your own business. There are long hours and often people can be brutal with their criticism. It has taken me a while, but I have learned a lot about having grace for myself and for knowing when to let criticism roll off and when to allow it to make me better.

Emporium Pies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Emporium Pies is a specialty pie shop. We have three locations in Dallas. I am very proud of our consistent product and of our wonderful team. We strive to be a great place for both our guests and our team and every year we get better at achieving those goals. I believe that our commitment to making handmade pies and our willingness to change and learn as we grow has been our biggest strong suit.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have had several proud moments, but when the people who work at our shop tell me that they love their job it makes me very happy. We all spend a lot of time at work, I feel like it is my most important task to try my best to make an excellent work environment for our team.
