Today we’d like to introduce you to Mesha Jackson.
Mesha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since college in the early 2000s, I’ve been in the entertainment industry since college. I started out doing promotions with DALLASPeeps.com I did it ALL! I was the door girl for literally a week, (being the door girl wasn’t my thing) street team promo, (Yes, I passed out flyers in heels & put them on cars). I promoted heavily on my dallaspeeps online account, Facebook back when you needed a college ID to have FB and the infamous MySpace.
MySpace is what jump-started my career. I met SO many amazing people on MySpace and then Twitter. From there, I started my own weekly event called Twitter Tuesday’s, which gave local talent an opportunity to perform LIVE weekly. From up and coming artists like Dondria & Broadway, Enertia, B. Simone and more! I had some of the best local comedians, poets, DJ’s and choreographers perform.
Fast forward to 2011, when I had one of my biggest blessings! I was blessed to work with one of the best owners & establishments in the city — PRIVAE DALLAS. I had a weekly event there which I affectionately titled, Fierce Friday’s. The TOP celebrities, entertainers and athletes frequented every Friday. This opportunity really skyrocketed my brand. The rest is history!
I remember the long, tiring days between the years 2002-2008 working a full-time job in the property management industry and working until 3 am at my events. I’ve always been incredibly driven. I’ve always been a hustler. I left corporate America in 2008 to fully dedicate myself to TickledPink. It hasn’t been easy, and I wanted to give up several times.
Being the only female promoter/owner of an entertainment/marketing/PR company has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I’m a one-woman show. Thanks to GOD I’ve made it this far. I’m eternally grateful for ALL of the amazing promotional companies I’ve worked with over the years. They continue to believe in me and support my brand. My loyal clients, supporters, family, and friends keep me grounded, and I’m incredibly thankful.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Whew! It’s been difficult. I’ve come a long way! Like I mentioned before, I started in this business in college. I was very green but hungry to learn! I was working as a resident assistant to cover my room/board while in school — a full-time student and working for the college parties.
From there, I signed with a local talent agency to pursue my career in print modeling and commercials. I helped launch the T-Mobile print ads, I worked with JC Penney, Sears, Target & a huge back to school national commercial for Walmart! Which aired for almost a full year. All while doing my promo gigs. I was a leasing agent/marketing director for major property management companies for eight years.
In January of 2008, I quit my job to fully dive into my brand. I had to move back home for a year to save money so I could invest in myself. Once I saved up enough money in 2009, I moved back to downtown Dallas, and I haven’t left since. While saving money for that year I was so hard on myself. I wanted things to happen overnight. I realized God was teaching me patience.
I’m so grateful for that time because I learned how to save money and what it means to invest in your brand. I drove my Ford Mustang (cash car) for many years to avoid car payments so I could invest in myself. I’ve never been one to “keep up with the Jones’).
My parents have always taught me how to hustle and believe in myself. I’m a hard worker and self-made girl boss. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, misunderstood, broke and rejected. All of my setbacks made me who I am today!
