Meet Michelle Kitto of Urban Spools Sewing Lounge in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Kitto.

Urban Spools is a continuation of Michelle’s lifelong love affair with textiles and sewing. Creating with her hands has always been a hobby, a form of therapy, and a passion. She prefers functional art that brightens the home and expresses the maker’s personality.

Like many creative types, she is an artist with numerous talents, including fused glass, appliqué, quilt making, garment sewing, and embroidery. A sewing teacher for more than a dozen years, her passion for her subject is evident. Sharing her knowledge and skills with new sewists brings her joy and satisfaction. She believes that everyone has a creative side and when we nurture that side of ourselves, our whole life is richer for it, she says. Her mission with Urban Spools is to help others discover their own creative passion.

Urban Spools would not exist without the love and support of her husband Glen who is generous to a fault and friend to man, child, and beast. Glen is also a creative type, dabbling in ceramics and photography. His second love after Michelle is a 1963 Italian Lambretta scooter named Lola. Between the two of them, Michelle and Glen have three children and two grandchildren. Week days, Glen is busy working in a commercial real estate career, but can be found most weekends helping around the shop. Urban Spools is a dream nearly 30 years in the making. Whether you take a class with them or just stop by for a cup of coffee and a chat about fabrics, they would love to meet you.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It really has been a relatively smooth road. There have been a few ups and downs with finding the correct team to work at the shop and a few short periods of slow sales, but all in all it’s been a fun and exciting journey with continued growth each New Year.

Urban Spools Sewing Lounge – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a modern sewing lounge featuring classes, bright modern fabrics, notions, patterns and books all geared to inspire your creativity and a community of creatives. We strive to provide support, encouragement and inspiration. We are known for our bright, modern fabrics and projects and classes that appeal to the younger (and young at heart) sewist. We offer classes for beginners to advance in garment sewing and quilting. We are an authorized Handi Quilter Longarm Machine Dealer and offer long arm quilting services.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We were awarded Entrepreneur of the Year in 2016 by the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce. Such an honor!

I am also very proud when I see people come in to shop and I find out that they met in a class at Urban Spools and now are fast friends. This is the biggest reason I opened the shop – to create a place where people could connect over a common interest.
