Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy and Christopher King.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mindy and Christopher. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Home styling began for us as a hobby. We spent years collecting furniture, and unique art, having it framed just-so, styling and restyling our own 80 year-old home, strolling through vintage stores, and searching for antiques. On our second date, about 6 years ago, we went to Downtown McKinney and cruised through all the antique shops. On that day, Christopher got this giant, green barn light that hung in our living room until just recently! We love to mix all of our finds with more modern pieces, and quirky elements too. Plus, both of us have a background in retail, styling, and customer service so we love helping people.
At a certain point after collecting furniture and decor, we had a conversation about pursuing something more closely related to our hobby as a profession and we landed on home staging and styling. It’s been the most fun leap we’ve made in our marriage and life and we are so grateful to be able to be doing something we love.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have had obstacles and expect more, but we face them willingly! We know that struggle leads to growth, and mistakes are opportunities; we really believe that wholeheartedly!
Recently on a project, we had two new sofas we planned to use and when we unboxed the first one, we saw that it was significantly damaged, the frame itself was broken from being moved. It was a blue velvet stunner that we had designed the whole room around! We rallied and ordered another to replace it, then, moved on to the next room, another living area, and no joke, the second couch had a tear in the upholstery. Our bad luck seemed slightly unbelievable but we carried on, got two new sofas, made our deadline and learned to check our new merchandise immediately next time, something we didn’t know to do before then! Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gathering Wool story. Tell us more about the business.
Gathering Wool is us, a husband and wife duo; we specialize in warm, modern, beautiful home staging and styling. We use mid-century, furniture, bohemian and vintage textiles, and unique plants, all styled with a free-spirited twist. We never use anything in our projects that we don’t love or would not have in our own home. We also love to take on smaller staging jobs, for properties that are not vacant, but may just need a little bit of a refresh with some cool art or a fresh rug. Most home staging companies have big minimums, but we love jumping in on smaller projects too, with the same design authenticity. That authenticity is what sets us apart, along with a passion for what we do!
“Gathering wool” is a centuries-old idiom that basically means, “to daydream”. We’ve been gathering wool, literally in the form of furniture and textiles, and figuratively for a long time now, and we are so happy to be chasing our dreams!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We believe that in all industries customers are responding to authenticity and unique experiences that challenge the status quo. In the age of social media, all businesses are aware that their aesthetic is super important, and that the success of their business can come down to how their brand appears online and on Instagram, and the same is true for real estate properties. … And we know that people are building personal brands of their homes and personal spaces.
We are excited to work alongside our clients to meet them where they are with styling their space and to represent a look that is not only cool but authentic to them and something they are proud to show.
