Today we’d like to introduce you to Moses Mbai.
Moses, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
5th Generation Coffee was created because I noticed an area of opportunity within my family business. We’ve been drinking coffee off our farm for generations but never offered it to the world until now. So, I thought about it one night in my bed, I couldn’t sleep nor could I let the possibility go of starting my own business. About a year ago, I came up with a science theme concept because it’s actually a lot of science involved when it comes to coffee, that clicked. I started working on the farm in Nairobi Kenya, spending countless hours attending coffee seminars, workshops, going to school (yes, there is a coffee school crash course), researched labeling I learned whatever I could about coffee! Then, 5th Generation Coffee was born. I knew I wanted to pay homage to my family that’s worked in this industry before me so that’s how the name came about. I, my sister and cousins was the 5th Generation, we created this company because we want to reach a new generation with our product. Coffee is the number one consumed beverage in the world. I’m offering high-quality coffee at a great price point. People go to different places and there drinking brown water that has a hint of coffee. 5th Generation Coffee is the real deal.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been easy. It’s a struggle launching your own business when you have to wear all the hats HR, Sales, Marketing, Web Designer, Social Media Analyst, Model, Spokesperson. it gets tough day to day. But you learn things in each role so it gives you the experience to teach your team how to execute properly.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with 5th Generation Coffee – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Finding 5th Generation was born with my current love for coffee. I was heavily influenced by my Grandfather who has a coffee farm in Nairobi, Kenya. When I would let my close friends and co-workers try the coffee from back home in Kenya, they fell in love. So, I decided to start my own business where they can enjoy my coffee and several others from around the world. When I begin to do my research, I noticed a lack of diversity within this business which further pushed me to become a boss. Noticing there were little to non-black-owned companies, it was a challenging opportunity that intrigued me.
I’m the Founder of 5th Generation Coffee. We sell high-quality ground coffee thats sourced from my farm in Kenya. Kenyan coffee has a very signature flavor that I’m sure a lot of people would fall in love with. That flavor is called Pure Potent because it’s Kenya’s finest coffee bean that we produced. I’ve been fortunate to also partner with world-renowned coffee farmers to provide other flavors from India, Brazil, and Costa Rica! We’ve all become one big family under 5th Generation’s Umbrella.
I’m most proud of the fact that we are the first black-owned online coffee company in Texas. Honestly maybe the south in general. That’s a big deal for me and my team. Entering the coffee market and being a new face, new race different in general it makes me proud that I’ve decided to do something different. I’m confident I’ll find the support within this market. I will always stay true to who I am and never change or conform to be anyone but Moses. I want to inspire people to be you it’s okay to be scared at times to step outside the box and dream big. But you’ve got to do it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that you can retire here in the DFW area. Real estate is at a great price point, gas and other essentials are very accommodating to build a future with a family here. The least thing I dislike is the nightlife, lol. It’s not too many places me and my friends can go out and have fun, unfortunately.
