Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Stewart.
Nicole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Oral Fixation started in a blackbox theatre in Uptown in 2011 and today calls the 750-seat Moody Performance Hall home. A live storytelling series for adults, Oral Fixation (An Obsession With True-Life Tales) features 7 Dallas-area locals reading aloud their true, personal stories on a certain theme which is always an idiom in the English language. Our next show coming up on Valentine’s Day is called “Stick Together.” There will be stories about marriage and siblings as well as about overcoming a cleft lip and palate. On May 2nd, you’ll hear “Broken Record.” And our season 6 finale on June 19th is “All Over The Map.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The growth we’ve experienced has been phenomenal. From the start, Dallasites demanded more stories. We set a rhythm of producing 7 new stories on a monthly basis- that was hard to keep up with. Today, we spread out the shows a little more to allow more time to create and market our content. We also have explored multiple venues in town as well as in Austin and Houston. We love having a home at Moody Performance Hall because each time you tackle a new venue, there is a steep learning curve.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Oral Fixation – what should we know?
Oral Fixation is known for being an amazing night out at the theatre. For a $25 ticket, you get an 80-minute rollercoaster ride through the gamut of human emotions and experiences. Primarily, we feature stories of transformation that inspire compassion and community. We have featured restauranteurs Jay Jerrier of Cane Rosso and Mico Rodriguez of Mesero, Ken Bethea from the Old 97’s band, and former Miss America and Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson. This is no open mic night. Each evening is curated with hand-picked storytellers who undergo an intensive editing and rehearsal process. The result is a knockout evening of stories that move you to tears, guffaws, and laughter.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’ve always understood a good business to be something that serves a direct need or void in the community. We need stories in order to be able to understand ourselves and others. For some, this comes through religion. For others, through entertainment. Oral Fixation provides for that need in an exciting, warm, professional manner that brings people together.
