Today we’d like to introduce you to Nir Sela.
Nir, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Originally from Israel, moved to the US in 2002 after serving the Israeli Navy. Lived in NYC for 15 years, had coffee shops, watch company & hotel manager in NYC. Moved to Texas (Plano area) in 2012, after a couple of years bought a failing coffee shop in downtown Garland put my heart and soul into that business got really connected with the community and was able to make it into a successful business. Sold that coffee shop, and open Layered after falling in love with Downtown McKinney lifestyle.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not so smooth Layered is situated in the heart of the historic district, and we had 5 months delayed in opening this location, (dealing with all the specifics and rules in regard to preserving history) but I am very lucky and fortunate that I have a great landlord. (John Rattan) John was very kind to us and understanding without having John Rattan as a landlord I wouldn’t be able to open Layered doors.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a scratch kitchen; we have liege waffle we import our pearl sugar that used in that from Belgium. We also have authentic smoked fries. We also roast our own coffee beans that organic and are imports from Ethiopia. We also have (probably most known for) we specialized in high-end wedding cakes and Deseret display we’ve been featured in many magazines around the world and the USA.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Israel; I have 1 sister and 2 brothers. Growing up I was playing soccer while my siblings are world class athletes. My younger brother Dudi Sela is Israel No.1 tennis player for the last decade. He reached the ranking of 29 in the world. I am very close to my family my sister lives in Plano, and she was the reason I moved to the USA.
