Meet Nitia Musico of Rugs and Stuff by Nitia in Denison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nitia Musico.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a creative child from a very young age. Always making things from my Mother’s scrap fabrics and boxes. I asked and received a sewing machine when I was just 6. Educated in England, I was very fortunate to go to a very creative high school, where the many areas of the art department exposed me to a wide variety of media. I went to Art College where my BA (Hons) degree was in Furniture and Textiles. After graduating, I came back to Texas where I sidestepped for a few years becoming a nanny, in order to get my self-settled. Following a diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I decided I needed to presume my passion and started my own business in 1994.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
From the beginning, my customers have done all my advertising for me. Word of mouth is the best compliment you can get. Although I struggled a little at first and still nannied part-time, so I could pay my bills. My business has continued to grow and grow over the years. And I still do work for some of my very first customers more than 20 years later.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rugs and Stuff by Nitia – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I custom make rugs and furniture, (including sofas, chairs, ottomans, benches and headboards). Upholster walls. Reupholster furniture and make cushions. Basically, anything textiles for the home.

I am most proud of the work I do with Designers in the many new apartment complexes around Texas. Building seating areas and upholstering walls in the communal areas.

I feel that my work stands out as I am able to adapt small concept images and sketched ideas to large-scale pieces. Custom made means exactly what you want, from the dimensions to the color and texture. And I pay careful attention to detail. I feel that my high standards have brought me many return customers and referrals.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to continuing to making unique pieces.

A much as I enjoy making exactly what the customer wants, I would one day like to find the time to create some of my ideas and sell them.
