Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Sadler.
Penny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I wanted to make people feel good and I wanted to create beautiful images. I wanted to collaborate with photographers and videographers and be part of a team. I’m very visual. I was lucky to meet some other makeup artists who worked with me and gave me a chance to apprentice while getting paid (most of the time.) I also studied and took advance courses every chance I got. Eventually I became known for doing corporate events and television. I was also a good hairdresser and hold a cosmetology license which is kind of rare for most makeup artists. That helped me get a wider variety of work.
I started a travel blog a few years ago as a creative outlet, completely unrelated to my hair and makeup business. That led to press trips to cover destinations like Italy and California wine country. From there I began to write for more online magazines and I was lead to study wine. I received my WSET level 2 certification in 2015. All the while I was continuing to freelance as a hair and makeup artist working on commercials, events and photo shoots.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is it ever a smooth road? Absolutely not. Challenges of being a freelancer are always looking for the next job and many months not making enough money to pay all your bills.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Penny Sadler Makeup Studio – what should we know?
In my freelance hair and makeup business I have great credentials working with high profile figures like presidents and A list actors. I’m known for doing camera ready makeup, being reliable and professional. I think my ability to wear many hats, from hairstylist to makeup artist to producer and just having lots of contacts sets me apart.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
No one really succeeds without the help of others. I truly believe that. I’ve been lucky to have a number of people who believed in me. I’m also proud to say I’ve mentored a lot of people who have gone on to have a lot of success.
