Meet Prerna Kalra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prerna Kalra.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Prerna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cooking.is.happiness was born on August 5th, 2019, while I was in the transition period of moving houses from one state to another to another and was staying in a hotel for two months. A lot had been cooking back then with limited pantry options and resources. The goal was to make quick and easy recipes and put together one satisfying meal. That is exactly when the idea of posting my everyday kitchen experiments on Instagram and grow a community of friends to share my creations with and also learn from others struck me. That is how my Instagram page was started with 0 followers and now to have a community of 6000+ friends. Through my page, I share a little bit of everything, from snacks and salad ideas to weekday meal inspiration to authentic and fusion recipes.

I’ve always enjoyed cooking and the kitchen definitely is my happy place but my actual cooking journey began after getting married in 2018. I have developed my love for cooking from my mom. I rather vividly remember myself as the curious kid who used to stand next to the counter, gazing at her as she happily cooked for family and friends. I like to believe that was the time when I also fell in love with cooking. That satisfaction on one’s face after eating what I cook is what brings me sheer happiness and keeps my spirits high to keep learning and experimenting.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Social media has so much to offer that if followed the right way, it can fill oceans of knowledge and learning. The initial challenges were to understand the marketing strategies and techniques required to grow a social media page, to maximize reach and increase follower base. It has been a path of immense learning with a number of ups and downs in terms of growth, numbers and success of the page.

My name is Prerna, currently living in Texas, USA and originally from Delhi, India, the face behind my Instagram channel @cooking.is.happiness and the creator of my blog, The Kitchen Delight. I’ve taken a little corner on the web to share my love for food and spread happiness through my everyday kitchen stories. My goal is to assure people who are just beginning to cook that cooking is not a task but a fun activity that can be enjoyed day in day out. My enthusiasm hits a high not only in relishing good food but also in crafting recipes. I strongly believe in food mood and creating recipes listening to my heart and stomach works the best for me. My real creativity shows up in the kitchen, adding life to a recipe with guesswork and improvisation is my favorite thing to do. Playing around with ingredients to create something delicious + healthy-ish brings me joy and I absolutely love adding flavors, variety and colors to my plate.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The future plans are to work towards growing my blog and other social media handles to reach as many people as possible and spread happiness and joy through food.
