Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Young.
Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Where it all started… high school! Growing up, school wasn’t really my thing, and at that time I knew college wasn’t an option. Thankfully, I attended a high school that offered cosmetology, and I was able to obtain my cosmo license a few months before my diploma. I began working at a Smartsyle inside Walmart only to be fired six months later.
I always tell people that story because it was the thing that made me really hustle and build my business!! I began renting a chair and passing out every business card I had, and I was able to build my clientele in a year! I would later learn that most stylist would say it takes longer, but I believe that a passion for this industry, love for humans and a whole lot of faith makes for a good recipe for success. I stayed consistent working behind the chair for ten+ years before I literally ruined years of hard work and loyal clients. I went from a full book to getting a second job and going to college to attempt to find a new path.
The year I turned 30 I was ready to do anything but stand behind a chair. And then my life changed drastically in the most amazing way! I met Bob Spruce an amazing mentor in the business who helped me kick my own ass and get over my shit, discover my worth and how important hairstylists are and learn to love what I get to do everyday! I rekindled my flame with the industry and became fiercely motivated to regain my status behind the chair. In 2012, I made a move to Austin, Texas and met fellow hairstylist and now best friend, Danielle Benson who taught me how to be confident in everything I do and carry myself accordingly.
After a very short year in ATX, my life brought me back home to Weatherford where I rented a chair for a few years before opening Hello Gorgeous! My husband, Zach, has always been my biggest supporter and encourager to open my own place. He had seen me help other people start their own salons and the love I have for it. He always said,” You need to just do that for yourself.” We had just bought a house and had been tossing around the idea of having a baby when the salon opportunity was presented to us. I wasn’t sure that I could do both… baby and business. We decided that business was the way to go, we signed the lease on the building and began planning to find out two weeks later… we were also going to have a baby!
Apparently, God thought we could handle both and two years later here we are! Things aren’t quite as crazy as they were in the beginning. I am blessed with an amazing team and an amazing clientele! It’s been fun, and I realize that I love mentoring and watching these girls grow and crush their goals every day! 20+ years later I have endured some bumps in the road and learned so much. This business has been my saving grace more times than I can count and I fall in love with many aspects of it over and over again! I am really excited to see what is next for Hello Gorgeous!!
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not smooth. But I have never met anyone that opened a business that has had it easy! Finding the right team is my number one priority! I believe having like-minded people in your space is important! We have a small space, and the energy that flows around gets felt by everyone; keeping it positive and fun is super important!
Thankfully, I have been really blessed with amazing girls, but we did go through a rough patch of some interesting characters. And, honestly, the financial side is challenging. I don’t think anyone wants to talk about money because it seems to be too personal… But I don’t think that way! I wish someone would have said to me,” It is going to be more challenging than you anticipate it being.”
Some people assume/think that having your own business means you’re just over here making money… uhm, one day I will be! Right now, I am busy paying off debt and keeping the coffee hot! The tradeoff is freedom! I have more choices of the things I want to do or not! I have an authority issue with somethings, and I like to make my own rules! 😉 And that has its own set of challenges! Y’all pray for my team!! Lol!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hello Gorgeous Hair Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am super proud of our work ethic, customer service and commitment to healthy hair! We specialize in women’s hair color, cutting, extensions, and Brazilian Blowouts!
I love that everyone on our team is passionate about creating the best experience possible while also turning out some amazing hair! I really think the number one thing that sets us apart is an amazing scalp massage because we actually do care!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I mean, I think the universal issue with the city is traffic. Meh, what can you do?! But I love that our city has some amazing local businesses, great pubs, good shows, and great food! Because we are closer to Fort Worth, I am really loving the Funkytown vibe of the Magnolia area… well, and Fred’s!
