Meet Saru Nemkul of Glamorous Brows and Skin in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saru Nemkul.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Saru. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hi, I’m the owner and founder of Glamorous brows and skin salon. The brief introduction I came to united state when I was 19 originally from Nepal. I don’t have any family here when I moved. I have always worked as an underpaid brow girl in somebody’s salon. I would work 60 – 70 hours a week but wouldn’t make more than pay cheque to pay cheque life. Life starts getting harder when I found out I was pregnant. I knew I couldn’t work 60 hours anymore baby is on the way I was going to college at that time to get my degree, I got scared couldn’t think what can I do help my husband. My husband was struggling and building his real estate business too.

After a thousand thought, I decided I take a different route than my college degree and go for esthetician school to get my license. I had convinced my husband for this. I was three months pregnant when I started going to beauty school. I would work on weekends and go to school on weekdays, no rest time. I was nine-months pregnant when I got my license, I was so happy and proud. I had a baby and had to stay home for recovery, my mind wouldn’t stop, I keep thinking the way I can be with my baby and also help my husband and work. I start getting phone calls from my clients from my previous job then I told my husband to buy me a chair. I am gonna start working from home, I printed my business cards, start passing around to my neighbors. Making clientele from home. My son was four months when I first thought of opening my salon, but money was tight, scared to take a risk, then my husband came up with an idea of booth renting, he supported me, he knew I wasn’t the one who’s gonna depend on him and stay home.

By God’s mercy, we found booth rent, I told them I don’t have family here and I am scared to trust anybody with my baby, so if I can bring my baby with me, she was amazing nice enough to say yes. I cried of joy, I saw the hope. I would take my baby in a stroller and pass out my cards in Texas summer heat. Somedays, I wouldn’t get any client but I was happy at least, I am trying and my baby with me. I would make $40 and call my hubby, at least, I made a diaper money, baby. He would get mad and frustrated, try to convince me to stay home, his business was picking up but I refused to stay home.

After a year, my dream opening salon came true. I opened my first salon in a bazaar. My son was moreover a year now and one of my clients help me babysitting my kids whom I always appreciate. I knew her for a long time and my baby could speak now and felt comfortable with her. Salon starts doing really good with a lot more clientele, now I have a part-time worker working with me. I found I was pregnant again and at the same time, the bazaar owner decides to close the whole bazaar. Once again, history repeated, I was devastated and this time, my husband keeps telling me to stay home now since we’re going to have two kids. But stubborn me still on opening other salons. I stayed home for about six months, my husband business was doing really good. I was happy with all my clients, they started calling me now, I then told my husband I am gonna open my salon despite all, I took a risk again and opened my salon. My mother called to come and help me with my kids for a few months, she was against of me opening the salon again, but she knew I wouldn’t stop, she came and stay with me for four months to take care of my kids. While she came, I took advantage and went to microblading class and eyelashes class. It’s been two years today, I looked back, that was so much struggle I had to deal but I lived my dream. We are one of the best threading places in Dallas today, I have employed working for me now. Within the two years of business, we have been doing great.

We been doing really good, Not only brow threading now I  am brow instructure as well , and I am also back in university to get educational goal where I left behind . We are also thinking about opening location pretty soon.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it wasn’t at all. An immigrant who doesn’t have family here despite having two kids was trying to make her dream and business come true wasn’t easy. I knew I have talent knowledge and skill but I didn’t have support. My husband is a great support for me but he was building his own business too. A lot of fall downs but having faith working hard and not losing hope made is possible.
