Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Fisher.
Scott, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started baking cheesecakes for friends and family using my wife’s mother’s recipe for cheesecake. Friends shared with their friends, and before we knew it we were getting requests from strangers to have at their dinner parties (which we weren’t invited to!). We were both looking for a change in our lives, and had often thrown around ideas for starting a business. The perfect storm came together, and we decided to jump off the ledge and start our bakery around her mom’s cheesecake recipe. We’ve since added more than a dozen out-of-the-box flavors, and then further specialized in bite sized cheesecakes.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of our friends and family thought we were crazy at first for starting a business on a shoestring budget. We had months where we picked up odd jobs to make sure we could cover rent for our kitchen. About two and a half years ago, we found out that we were pregnant, and now we have a beautiful son. Fortunately, we’ve developed a wonderful network of other professionals – many of them also business owners and parents – who we can rely on as a sort of extended family.
Dandelion Cheesecakes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The most important thing to us is the human element of what we do. My wife and I are present in the business every single day, whether it’s personally delivering and setting up a wedding, packing up cheesecakes in the store for client gifts at the counter, or visiting with other events industry professionals so that we know the best people to work with.
If you read our reviews online you might see people mention our popular Bananas Foster cheesecake, our unique Gooseberry Elderflower flavor, or even our king cakes for Mardi Gras, but more importantly, you’ll find review after review where either my wife or I are mentioned (often by name) because we took the time to listen and respond. A good friend of mine likes to say “People first, then profits.” We do our best to take that to heart.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is knowing that I made a difference which can take many forms. Sometimes it’s a couple taking a minute on their wedding night to send a video about how much they loved their cheesecakes. Sometimes it’s a thank you note from someone who got cheesecake in the hospital and made it through a rough day. Sometimes it’s finding out that your cheesecake client gift was part of closing a big deal on a new account. I believe that our mission in life is to bring happiness to as many people as we can, and cheesecake is just the vehicle we’ve chosen to get us there.
