So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had been working in the wireless/technology space in sales and business development for Fortune 500 companies and desired a more fulfilling work environment. I am a lifelong pet owner and traveled frequently for work which meant leaving my pets in the care of others. I was aware of tech that was successfully employed in other verticals and thought it could be applied to pet care to help answer questions such as when did my provider arrive/depart? Or how was the quality of the visit? As each day passed I grew more excited about how I could solve this gap using technology and left an HQ position with an excellent company to start a small business combining my love of animals, tech, and sales.
Today, according to the most recent study by Pet Sitters International, we are in the top ten percent of all pet care companies. I credit our success to our talented team of pet care providers. In a service-oriented business, tech is nice, although our human resources are our number one asset. Nothing is possible without the right team which is why we hire employees, not independent contractors. Our team is diverse and consists of a zookeeper, K9 handler/certified vet tech, K9 trainer/agility coach, equine trainer and more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Surprisingly it has not been too bumpy. When you’re not paying a consultant, have years of experience or have a mentor then you tend to learn as you go. This approach is okay although this means making mistakes so I have been learning a lot! The good news is that change can be implemented quickly and bureaucracy is not an issue. Having spent over fifteen years working for big companies I appreciate this aspect of small business! Have an idea? Go for it! Falls flat? Adjust and keep trying – there is no failure in trying only lessons and I enjoy learning. There is a beauty in the process if you are open to it.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending summers with my grandma and brother in the country on a farm that had horses, pigs, and goats.
