Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Maas.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a graduate of Booker T. Washington HSPVA and had a focus on vocal performance. I decided to take some time away from music and study medicine and education… But I decided that was not what I saw myself doing, I wanted to be happy every day working on something I was very passionate about. I decided to start back my music career and I now study at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, England. I cannot imagine a different life now. I am writing songs and working with people from all over the globe on their music as well. I just released my debut single Crush, available on all streaming platforms. I worked with an Australian producer who lives and works in London, just more networking that I absolutely love. You never know who you will meet, even when just walking to the station.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, I have hit many road bumps. I attended a college that I realized was not the place for me and decided to leave within the first few weeks, I struggled with self-confidence issues, depression and anxiety throughout my high school career. It sounds cliche but I really have learned from these bumps and I believe it has made me a stronger individual. I have found a way to cope with the craziness of life and I started writing music. Find something that makes you smile, even if you don’t show anyone, do it for you.
Please tell us more about your work.
I am a singer-songwriter currently based in London, because of University. I love being able to write music that people can relate to and feel happy singing or dancing to. I think studying at such a prestigious high school where I learned theory sets me apart from many singer-songwriters. Mainly because people in this industry usually do one thing, they either write the lyrics, music or play as a session musician. I kind of do all of those. Meaning that I write my own lyrics, write the music, do a lot of the production and I am studying how to become a session musician at my University in London. I applaude everyone in this industry because it is extremely hard to get in and get noticed.
What were you like growing up?
Oh man… where do I begin? I was a very shy, awkward tomboy who said I would NEVER sing. At age 11 I was a drummer in a rock alternative cover band. I was in love with Nirvana, The Beatles and random in this mix, Kimbra. I believe when my teacher at the time, Matt Gaskins, showed me Kimbra it was a ploy to get me into singing, harmonies and insane vocal lines. I really owe everything to Matt, he is the one that made me start singing. Yes, made me because like I said, I would NEVER sing.
