Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzy Moritz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Suzy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began painting right out of the womb. My mother was an artist and I recall hanging onto her hem as a small child while she painted murals in homes in the upscale neighborhood of River Oaks in Houston, where I was born.
In 2005 after a long career in business, and with encouragement and support from husband, Scott Rawdin, and family, I decided to make my lifelong passion for the arts a full-time occupation. I am a representational, impressionistic painting and sketch artist. My wall murals, lively pet portraits, landscapes and house portraits are found in many homes and businesses throughout the United States. My greatest assets are versatility and artistic fearlessness. I experiment with many mediums and many subjects.
In 2009 I was asked to paint watercolors for the Junius Heights Historic District Home Tour and this started the business of painting house portraits. For the past 8 years, I have been the Official Artist for the Home Tour and for the past 4 years is the Official Artist for the Swiss Avenue Mothers Day Home Tour. In 2011 I was asked to do 400 original pen and ink drawings for the Omni Hotel in downtown Dallas. The artwork is located in 400 of the King Suites and some of my landscapes can be found in the gift shop.
I spend summers mastering the art of painting the dazzling effects of New Mexico.’s light and its corresponding shadows from the spectacular and inspiring landscapes of Georgia O’Keeffe Country to the magical towns of Taos, Santa Fe and Angel Fire and their surrounding vistas and magnificent sunsets.
I recently returned from a trip of a lifetime to France, where the spirit of the old masters touched my heart and inspired me to paint many paintings from the streets of Paris to the countryside and villages of Provence and Normandy.
When in Dallas, I work in my studio, Studio Art and Soul, located in The Cedars. My art can be seen at The Songbird Society, an upscale hair salon located on the edge of Highland Park in Dallas. It can also be seen at Ethan & Associates, located at the World Trade Center in Dallas. I also have worked at Mikuna Grill in Angel Fire, New Mexico.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road is not always smooth. It’s tough to make a living as an artist. So, I came up with a couple of things that bring a steady flow of income. Just getting your name and brand out there is difficult. I read several articles when I started and I have followed the path. Start off in your immediate sphere and get well known, then branch out.
I have been fortunate that I was a sales manager and actually taught networking. So, I constantly network. Most artists are a bit shy when in comes to talking about their art, but I constantly tell people I meet what I do and how I make it happen.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Suzy Moritz Fine Art is just that. I absolutely love what I do.
I am well known for my house portraits and lively, personal pet portraits. The house portraits are not architecturally perfect but are artistic renditions. When I do a pet portrait, I paint the eyes first, so that we can speak to each other while I paint them I am sort of a “Dr. Doolittle” when it comes to my pets.
Also included in my specialties are wall murals and landscapes. I am well known for my “big sky” paintings. Then I can’s forget the hundreds of pen and ink and watercolor paintings I have done. So, in other words, I do small, intricate works all the way up the large murals.
What were you like growing up?
I was sort of shy. You wouldn’t know it now. I wouldn’t raise my hand in class to ask a question. I couldn’t say my name in front of a group of people. I think I was pretty well liked, had a lot of friends I was always artistic and loved to paint and draw throughout my childhood. I took ballet and constantly took lessons along with my art lessons.
I went to college at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas to become a commercial artist, and then pursued other things to make a living. It took me 40 years to make my dream a reality.
