Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Hawkins.
Tabitha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m Tabitha and I’m a mom of four and founder of So Millennial, LLC – a Media and Marketing company. I started blogging back in 2004, a year before I started my professional marketing career. In 2005 when I found myself pregnant and in college, I started a blog to follow my journey into motherhood. Without knowing what I was in for, I took my skills from my day job (Digital Marketing & PR) and turned into a full-time income, and rode off into the sunset…until I lost my passion for it once it became over-saturated with brand partnerships. I wasn’t writing anything that wasn’t sponsored—a big mistake. I sold the domain for six figures and continued growth in my Digital Marketing career, landing contract to run social media and influencer campaign strategy for some of the biggest brands in the world — like Disney, Marvel Studios, and Sephora. As I was starting to experience burnout in my corporate career, I launched another blog, that did well, but quickly lost its luster for the same reason as before – it was all about the money.
I felt like a fake and a fraud, so I sold that domain to go back to corporate in 2015. I re-started my corporate journey with a goal to be CMO by 35, and retire by 40, but after reaching Senior Management with a local travel company, I quickly realized that I didn’t care about job titles and mainstream success any more, and that for years, I’d been fighting against myself for validation that I was more than just a mom. I defined myself by a bunch of titles Senior Manager of Whatever, Mom Boss, #Mompreneur, and I was tired of it.
In 2019, I launched my current blog — The Mom Set (http://themomset.com). There I have no perfect moms allowed policy. My mission is to empower the generation of millennial moms by sharing honestly about motherhood, marriage, and life. I believe that mom guilt and the shame of imperfection can be replaced with inspiration and pride, and my hope is that by being real and transparent about everything, including my struggles — I can be part of that journey, for people who read my blog.
In May of 2019, I also launched a Facebook group for Millennial Moms (http://facebook.com/groups/
My husband who majored in journalism, is a sports expert and amazing storyteller and until recently he’d buried his talent in favor of his day job in sales. He recently launched his own blog, and we’re having so much fun working together and exploring new opportunities. Our 14 year-old daughter, is writing for my blog, and she’s even going to the Mom 2.0 Summit in LA with me in May! As a family — we have plans to launch our YouTube channel, in addition to some individual channels and podcasts this year, so we’re going to be busy.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. In the last five years, my life has been one traumatic event after another. I have suffered a miscarriage, PTSD, and had my marriage nearly destroyed by infidelity. I’m not kidding when I say we were on the brink of divorce, but by the grace of God, my family and I have survived it, and come out on the other side —TOGETHER.
Please tell us about your work.
I was one of the first “mom bloggers,” eons ago when I was 19, in college, and pregnant — when around the same time I started my Digital Marketing career. Since then, I’ve been leading social media strategy & management, influencer marketing, dynamic content creation and publishing, and branding — for some of the world’s biggest and favorite brands…and I’ve been able to work with many more as blogger and content creator!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Texas is HOME. I love the people, the diversity, and the true feel of the family in the communities. Texans are some of the nicest people in the country. I really believe that. There’s a genuine love for each other and in many communities —people from many different cultures and backgrounds truly live in harmony, regardless of race, religion, political leanings, and belief. What I like least about Texas is TRAFFIC!
