Meet Tamytha Cameron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamytha Cameron.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For as long as I can remember I have loved pictures. Growing up in South Dakota in a farming community population 200 and something, I spent a lot of time outdoors. There were long days riding bikes along country roads lined with fields of sunflowers and bushes overflowing with lilacs, summers at the lake cabin, swimming during the day and chasing fireflies at night, and working in the garden until the sun went down in a blaze of orange. I think I remember it just that way because my mom was one of those unique individuals who really saw things, and she taught me how to observe, how to savor all the beautiful details of life. She so often had a camera in her hands and so did I, trying to capture some of the look and feel of that precious time in our lives through the lens.

I wasn’t one of those people who always knew what I wanted to do. After graduating from college my husband and I started a business that I worked for some years. At the same time, I started to delve into my love of photography, opening a small studio in our east Texas town and shooting weddings and families with my medium format Hasselblad. Some years later I found myself in a new stage of life, divorced and new to DFW with two little girls, and I wasn’t sure what the next step was going to be, and quite honestly felt a bit lost. I decided that when you aren’t quite sure what to do that sometimes the best thing is just to start something, to move, and to step out in faith. I knew I loved art, and I decided to go back to school to earn a master’s in art history. This eventually led me to the Meadows Museum where I had the privilege of working for 5 years. One of my colleagues there asked me to photograph her wedding in Kentucky, and though it had been some years since I had done a professional photography job, I agreed, and the whole process was such a joy that I decided to pursue photography on a full-time basis. That was when Tamytha Cameron Photography began.

Please tell us about your art.
I am primarily a photographer of people, and Tamytha Cameron Photography specializes in the relational aspects of life: weddings, couples, and families. Every time I start a new project, it’s a labor of love. My partner in wedding photography is my daughter Celeste. Working together brings the best of our romantic, imaginative natures and our intense passion for photography to our wedding images… two generations of creativity. Although wedding photography is our first love, we have also been fortunate to photograph some pretty amazing and beautiful events here in our beloved Dallas. We work quite extensively with the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Meadows Museum, which fit quite nicely with my background in the arts, as well as several wonderful event planning companies, PR companies and numerous charitable organizations. I approach these happenings in much the same way I would a wedding. I always attempt to tell the story in the most beautiful and intuitive way possible.

For as long as I can remember, I have been thinking in pictures and composing in my mind. Nothing feels more natural than a camera in my hands. I have always had an eye for images… a way of seeing the beauty around me that others might not see or simply overlook. I love the whole process of photography, from the relationship I build with my client, to the shoot itself, to the editing process… and I love the creativity that happens on the computer, as it is just another layer of creative process where a perfectionist like myself can really dig in and have fun.

I really believe that everyone should have great photographs of themselves and the people they love. A beautiful photo can make a person feel good about who they are in the world and remind them of what is truly important, love, connection and the celebration of life’s milestones. I believe adamantly that everyone has their own unique allure, their own light, and I love capturing it with my camera.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge that photographers have in today’s digital age is not falling prey to the temptation to compare themselves to others. Within minutes you can peruse the perfectly curated Instagram feeds of literally hundreds of photographers in the Metroplex alone, not to mention the untold numbers worldwide that can be found and connected with online. I am a bit of a social media addict myself and it is easy to justify it as business building. This is definitely true on one level as to run a successful creative business in 2018 you really need an online presence to promote your brand. But it is a balancing act because there will always be someone doing it seemingly better, with more followers and more clients, traveling to the destinations that you would love to go to. And it the midst of all of this you have to stay true to yourself, and remember that all that matters are the client that you are working with at the moment, and that you bring the best of yourself and your creativity to that project. It’s vital as creatives that we do live in the moment, and that we be fully present when we are making images and interacting with clients.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
As a wedding, portrait and event photographer, my work usually finds its home with my clients, and that is as it should be. It is such an honor to document important parts of my client’s lives and to become a part of their histories… their story. I view it as a calling and I usually come away from a wedding or a shoot with lifelong friends. I love getting to know the people in front of my camera and I love celebrating their important seasons with images. When they are happy I am happy and it is such a huge part of why I do what I do!

This photography journey has already brought me so much satisfaction and has taken Celeste and I to some beautiful places to capture weddings and events… from the hill country of Texas, to beautiful beaches, alongside roaring rivers, and to a quiet ceremony in the forest. There is no destination that we wouldn’t travel to at the drop of a hat to do what we love to do.

You can of course view my work on my website as well as on my Instagram and I do love connecting with people through social media. If I have photographed you, you will most likely find yourself there. My work has also been featured on various wedding blogs and on the pages of local publications like Paper City, Modern Luxury, and Patron Magazine.
