Meet Teresa Taponpanh of Teresa at Skylight Salon in Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Taponpanh.

Teresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began doing hair in 2012 at the flagship Toni & Guy Academy in Carrollton. Once I finished my education there, I knew my passion was for coloring hair. I then settled into a Toni & Guy International based franchise known as Essensuals London. It’s one of three franchises in the USA with many more around the world! Spending 3 1/2 years in a salon with was great, I learned a lot about the business and my trade, but eventually I knew that it was time to part ways and go independent. In 2016, I opened up The Glam Room in Allen, where I was the owner of a suite in Mattison Avenue. Over the course of a year, I truly enjoyed having my own space – until I was approached by two amazing gals who introduced me to Skylight Salon. It was then in 2017 that I packed up my room and moved back into an open concept salon in Downtown Allen to work with a strong and creative team!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are road bumps when it comes to hairdressing. When it rains, it pours! I can be booked soiled for weeks or months at a time getting everyone ready for summer cruises and vacations, and then it can be dead as crickets chirping when people are stretching their wallets out to save for Christmas (and after the holiday).

Please tell us about Teresa at Skylight Salon.
Skylight Salon was founded in 2014 by Amber Gallegos and Lauren Nimmons. They too were once in my position as a “booth renter” and realized how hard it was for us to survive as independent contractors. The two collaborated and decided to open up their own salon where stylists can have their freedom – along with being taken care of as well. I love how Amber and Lauren take a lot of pride in the design and layout of Skylight. They have a vision in mind and stick to it. With being independent, we are able to come to a beautiful workplace, get top of the line education, along with top notch styling products! I, myself, specialize in color – which is why I chose this place to practice my trade. We do a lot of balayage, which is what I really love! I pay attention to detail and placement, and try to marry my ideas with clients so we can both be on the same page for our project of the day.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
If it’s hair related – I suppose it was my calling to be a colorist. I used to save my allowance and buy box color/bleach from the local grocery store and do my own highlights in my room. I was probably only 13 years old – and I hid it from my mother by wearing a bandana or headband for a month straight!! I will never forget how orange my hair was and how it eventually got to be blonde. This was before YouTube and other DIY blogs were out – so I would say that I self-taught myself pretty early on how to not jack up a person’s hair.
