Today we’d like to introduce you to Patti Colbert.
Patti, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved creating “different” gifts. I started making a few items for my own home and then for friends for their homes. It’s fun for me to start with a simple piece of glass, resin or wood and turn it into a piece of art. All of my home essential pieces are unique, different in size, color tones, jewels, chains, etc. I love to create and design pieces based on my client’s taste.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the struggles I had when I first started out was trying to fit this into my “mom schedule”. I never wanted to take away from family time but when you do custom work, it infiltrates into that family time. Especially when you have everything sprawled all over the kitchen island and table. I had so much time as well as money invested in my business, I was determined to work around the obstacles. It got to a point where there was nowhere we could sit down as a family to eat dinner, I knew things had to change. Thankfully, the hard work paid off and I was able to build a home studio. My studio is a “safe place” haha! Things don’t need to be put away every night, supplies can stay out while I am working. And the best thing is I have space for Create and Takes (workshops) where customers can come and design with me! I’ve had clients tell me it’s better than therapy to come to Studio 911! And I can honestly say they are right. Now, the only issue with family dinners is when someone calls upstairs and asks if I’m coming down to eat! I love creating in a clean, organized space that time just gets away from me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the All Things Patti story. Tell us more about it.
The reason I started All Things Patti was due to customer demands! I had many friends ask me to start selling things they would see in my home. My husband and I entertain, frequently, and for some reason, there is always a theme when it comes to having family and friends over. So, of course, I need to make things for these to correspond with these themes. Many times I would get phone calls after our event asking if I would share some of the items I’ve made for upcoming events my friends would be having. Then, I started getting a phone call for custom pieces – asking how much I would charge for my Royale Collection Wine Glasses, Soap Dispensers, Signs, etc. All of a sudden, I was pricing items (and I have to admit, I was terrible at putting a price on something I was making for a friend).
What makes me most happy is when I can help with donations, fundraising, etc. One thing that is most near and dear to me is whenever I get a phone call from a Police/Fire/EMT organization asking for hats that they can use to raise funds for fallen officers, displaced families who are victims of fires, Police Athletic Leagues, etc. When I get these phone calls, these orders are always pushed through to the top of my priority list. Being the daughter of a Boston Police Officer, there truly is a bond that never leaves you and the pride you feel when you are able to help. These are usually such sad stories when I get these phone calls but knowing there is a way I can help, no matter what the donation will be, always makes my heart happy.
Recently, I became a designer for a company, Chalk Couture, which has rapidly become the Number One, High End, Home Decor Business in the country (and we will be launching in Canada sometime in March/April 2019). My new motto… Let’s Talk Chalk! We are category-creating products, home-beautifying business. Chalk Couture specializes in high-end magnetic chalkboards, accessories, and Chalk Transfers; which are reusable adhesive silkscreens (12+ times) that can be used on chalkboards, windows, mirrors, tile, whiteboards, appliances, painted furniture and so much more! Our products include: Chalk Transfers, Chalkology Paste, Chalkology Ink, Chalkboards and DIY Tools. DESIGN. LOVE. REPEAT. We are a network marketing company (with an unbelievable compensation plan), taking over the halls and walls of America! This has been the best thing I could have ever added to my business. Chalk Couture sets you up with your own website where you can sell Chalk Couture products. Eventually, you may have a team below you, so you’ll also earn from their sales too. If you want to have your own business, Chalk Couture is a very low-cost way to start one. The designer kit is a one time fee of $99 – this kit includes over $240 worth of supplies which will kick start your business. I still can’t believe how this fell in my lap, never in a million years did I ever think I would bring another company into my business portfolio but the love I have for this company, the people and products still has my head shaking. Over the last year, I have met more people who want you to succeed if you want to make this into a business. I have many who are part of my network who never thought of themselves as being crafty. These “hobbyist” are in love with our products because of the ease of use. Everyone can do it. Any age, any level of crafting experience you may or may not have! It’s that easy. MAKE. MONEY. BEAUTIFULLY!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Because I have added Chalk Couture to my portfolio, there is no slowing down, especially with the launch of Chalk Couture in Canada. It may be no surprise that Canada is the number-one trading partner with the US! Because Chalk Couture is a category-creating business, it will be as new and fresh to Canadians as it is to
customers in the US, and we expect the market to be booming. That provides a wide-open
opportunity for Independent Designers in the US and Chalk Couture as a company. After launch, US Designers have an extended field to recruit and expand their Teams! Our Canadian friends have been asking for Chalk Couture, and it’s the next logical step for growth. Chalk Couture is ahead of the trend, our designs are well thought out and are exactly what the DIY Home Decor Market is looking for.
I have folks from all over the country on my Team (both male and female). Chalk Couture is selling itself!
