Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bull.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brittany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My roots are small town but my sights were always set on making a difference! In my hometown, if you weren’t in some form of after school activity you were more likely to end up in the “wrong crowd” as my grandma liked to call them. So naturally, I tried just about every sport my school offered plus a few it didn’t! Basketball, tennis, track, cheer, and powerlifting were all school teams I had a spot on… I was also in a band and I took private tumbling and stunt lessons once or twice a week at a facility in a nearby town. I continued my athletic lifestyle through college and after I graduated I always made it a point to remain “fit” or at least some version of in shape.
It wasn’t until I was 30-years-old that I was introduced to the actual bodybuilding industry. Now that I’m in it, it’s hard for me to remember what it was like before it all!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s NEVER a smooth road.
People can say they are as blessed and as fortunate as can be, but nothing worth having ever comes without a price.
I’ve put trust in the wrong people, I’ve put love into the wrong hearts. I have believed lies and I have fought when the fight was long over and lost. I’ve given up friends and time with family. I’ve set ideas and thoughts aside that I swore I’d never compromise on. I’ve felt depression, loneliness and I have wallowed in the swamps of defeat. BUT…
I have also found that the most incredible people are those that never see the spotlight. I’ve learned that trust is to be EARNED, not given. I’ve mended broken hearts, I’ve survived the pain I never thought I could. I have proven to myself that I AM STRONG! I am ABLE! I’ve found truth in myself and for every friend I gave up, I was gifted one more. I’ve learned that I am not always right, and I’ve learned to find the happiness within that. I have grown to be so much more than I ever thought I could be…
The road to what matters is NEVER easy, but the decision to keep walking IS!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Personal Trainer. Cliche, I know! But I truly feel it goes way beyond just guiding someone through physical movements. I like to think of myself as more of a half-trainer, half-therapist.
A great workout can be an incredible emotional release. I’ve had clients cry, scream, laugh… whatever they’ve been holding back! Some just need to vent, others need advice, and a few just need to take their mind off the next 10-15 reps. We work on building goals and setting standards for personal life situations. We train their mind to appreciate the feats their body is accomplishing and the progress they are making. Whatever their motive, it’s safe to say that I provide my clients with a more intimate experience that JUST working up a sweat.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Simple… Stay True to YOU! Your dreams, your goals, your ideals and your morals. Be honest with yourself and don’t allow yourself to be so easily swayed by the promises of others. The industry will demand a lot of you, including parts you never thought you’d offer up. Stand up for what you believe in and always remember there’s life beyond the gym and the stage. Stay true to all the beauty and flaws that make you, YOU!”
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Eh… what does the media even do besides spread negativity?!? Are there still people out there who wish women were chained to the stove? Yes! But there have been great strides for women’s equality… and great success!
That being said, these are definitely crazy times. When I was in school, I never once worried I would be competing against a boy… it’s hard for me to imagine what natural-born girls of today face in athletics with the possibility of facing off against a natural-born boy who “identifies” as one of them (even though he’s at a natural physiological advantage.)
It seems like the exclusivity of being a natural-born woman is slowly being revoked. We are forced to share with men everywhere… bathrooms included. Women have proven to be resilient, though. We will manage this just as we have managed every other curveball. With style and grace!
