Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Baker.
The newest addition to Dallas is a lifelong sports fan. Jasmine Baker started covering sports during her undergrad at KETR 88.9. She co-hosted the award-winning program ‘Lions After Dark’ and produced online content covering Texas A&M-Commerce Lion Athletics. Additionally, she wrote for the student-run campus newspaper The East Texan. Jasmine has since covered high school basketball playoffs, college and professional sports in the Dallas Metroplex.
In 2018, she covered her first pro season as a WNBA beat writer. Her experience has allowed her to be a guest on various sports talk shows and other local appearances. That same year, Jasmine won her first journalism award covering A&M-Commerce students and their work contributing to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Austinite grew up playing sports ranging from golf to basketball and made it to the AAU Junior Olympics in the javelin.
@WeGotGame2 is her sports platform highlighting Black women in sports culture. She uses the platform to elevate up-and-coming athletes, Black women-owned brands and events.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been far from a smooth road as I’ve navigated the Dallas sports market.
At the same time, there have been many men, of all backgrounds, who’ve been invaluable to my growth since I’ve started.
A huge thanks go out to the WNBA media where I have a whole new diverse group of colleagues helping me now.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m definitely most known for my WNBA coverage and platform @WEGOTGAME2. I can’t tell you how much it fills my spirit when random strangers send me a new athlete/team I’m not familiar with or news story about a female athlete. The fact that people KNOW me for my coverage is so encouraging. I’m so proud of being recognized for that especially from people I respect in this industry too. Being one of the few platforms nationally showing love to Black women in sports is definitely what sets us apart.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I have nothing but amazing women who have inspired me, the main being my mom, Evelyn. My mom came out of the backwoods of Mississippi and never played sports. That never stopped her from taking me to Tennessee games as a kid and showing up at almost all of my games and meets.
Does she still struggle to understand the need for a field goal? Maybe but she’s always been my biggest supporter. Over the years, I’ve added a few more to the list of women who’ve inspired me:
Magnificent 7 – This set of young women inspire me the most. They consist of my nieces and little sisters I love as my own flesh and blood. Talia, Jacie, Jessika, Harper, Kymiah, Sahriah and Emma Jane are my motivation every day to show that you can do anything as a woman.
Fab 5 – My childhood friends.
Minny Tribe – My closest sports sisters who encourage me on the daily.
ATX Family – Family friends from back home.
Serena Williams – GOAT (male or female)
