Today we’d like to introduce you to Maiah Holbrook.
Maiah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I would like to say my fitness/wellness story started when I was 7 years old. During the summer, my dad made my older brother and I wake up at 6am, ride our bikes half a mile to the elementary school track and run 1 mile without stopping. I absolutely loathed this routine but every mile built a strong sense of intrinsic motivation in me.
Around age 10, started AAU track. I fell in love with running. In middle and high school I tried soccer, tennis, dance, basketball and volleyball but I always came back to track.
College was a very intense learning experience for me. I studied nutrition, I was obsessed with how the right fuel can improve athletic performance. I even created a nutrition plan for my boyfriend who played football. It helped him improve his endurance and his recovery time.
College was a busy time and I didn’t work out as consistently as I should have. However, I was still active. My busy schedule was where I really found myself, I was active in every top organization on campus including Greek life. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. kept me serving my community, planning, speaking, writing stepping and dancing. The only thing that slowed me down was my first concussion in 2014. By the grace of God and the degree department I was able to graduate on time.
My senior year I was chosen to intern for the Arkansas Verizon Wireless HQ in their corporate wellness department. While there I trained, taught group exercises, developed nutrition plans and planned events to get employees involved. I found my passion for helping others by teaching them how to feel well. I was able to fine tune skills I rely heavily on today.
Post undergrad I was able to take everything I learned to Dallas to start my career. Just four months after my move from Arkansas I suffered my second concussion. This changed my entire life and really pushed me to elevate my knowledge in nutrition and supplementation to survive. I developed a gluten intolerance, gained weight, went through depression, lost weight, got happy again and I shared ALL of this on my Instagram page @maiahthemeraid.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No smooth sailing here. Two concussions less than 2 years apart really changed my mind and body. My personal struggles and determination to be well is what got me here today!
My challenges forced me to learn more about my body and how to keep it healthy. My struggles inspired me to teach others how to become healthy and heal themselves.
Advice wise, I recommend that other women find their ‘why.’ Why do you want to change your eating habits? Is it to lose weight? Is it to relive stress? Is it to prevent getting the disease your parents and grandparents suffer with? How will the decision to improve your health change your life? How will it improve the health of the people around you. You need a reason bigger than yourself. My family, clients and followers are what keep me motivated. Find something to ground you, something strong enough to keep you focused on your goal. This becomes your motivation.
We’d love to hear more about Maiah The Mermaid.
Day to day I am with my clients training as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor, teaching and motivating. When I’m not with my clients I am writing nutrition plans, exercise plans, creating content and editing as a wellness coach and YouTuber. To make that concise I teach wellness through movement, nutrition, habits and meditation. I specialize in nutrition and Lagree Fitness which is a form of training that effectively combines resistance, endurance, core, and cardio training to safely stimulate strength, flexibility, and balance. I teach at @OneLagree here in Dallas.
The combination of my skills and experiences is what sets me apart from other trainers. One of my strengths is my mental approach.
Being in recovery from a TBI showed me how much your mental state can help or hurt, you reaching ANY goal, but mainly wellness goals.
I am the healthiest that I’ve ever been in my life. But I know what it feels like to be desperate for change and doubtful of your ability to make that change. That’s what I am most proud of; my ability to learn through life’s challenges and turn them into blessings.
I can meet you where you are in your fitness journey and help you move from doubt to success. I am known for my ability to create specialized programs to meet a client’s need. I am an encourager not a drill sergeant. I am serious about getting results through my 360 approach.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Hillary Clinton said “The Future is Female” and there isn’t a truer statement. There are no limits, there’s nothing in particularly we aren’t well positioned for!
