Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastiana Black.
Sebastiana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Whew, this is a tough question. Let me start by saying hairstyling is in my bloodline. Starting with my aunts, and my mother. My mom was a hairstylist and nail technician. She owned several locations once upon a time. Unfortunately, I fought the idea of doing hair, and just knew it would never be my career. In my head, I needed the good ole faithful college experience but really couldn’t afford it. I left Dallas on a hunt to find my future, searching right at the University of Houston. Gratefully, I made it two years and some change pursuing my Bachelors in Psychology. That’s where I discovered that college was not for me. I had a different calling, and I needed to go to cosmetology school. I knew then I found my niche.
Two years in the game, I am so thankful for deciding to make hair my mission. Today, I am so satisfied with my work and the team I have around me. I have so much more work to put in, and places to go. I’m just getting started.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There isn’t such thing as a smooth road, ever. It may start smooth sailing, but just like the majority of the roads we drive on today, they always manage to have at least one bump in the road. The main issue that seems to keep me bumping my head into the wall is the fact I’m adopted. So, I’ve struggled with self-esteem, abandonment, real love, family issues. I’ve learned to forgive my mother for her mistakes and try to apply them to my life. Just like riding a bike for the first time is hard and sometimes discouraging; so is life.
As an adult, who is also a woman, I chose to keep fighting for my life, believe in my purpose, and be thankful for the blessings given from above. Along with this journey, I’ve learned when faced with obstacles, call in my help. My help comes from God. I wouldn’t be this strong, forgiving, ambitious woman I am today without God. I want to tell other women to trust in the lord and have faith that he’s going to bring you through.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SEBASTIANA HAIR – what should we know?
I am a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in Hair Coloring, Extensions, and Natural Hair. I offer professional hair care to clients in the DFW Metroplex. I’m located in Cedar Hill, TX near the outlet mall. I am known for my professional color skills when it comes to blonde, pastel, neon colors. I also make wigs for women battling hair loss. I am proud that my brand represents women in a fashionable way.
Women trust me to bring their ideas to life when creating their next stylish look. My brand represents who I am as a woman of God and how hard I want my clients to have the best quality. Due to the knowledge gained and business experiences, the business has grown rapidly. Hair is a saturated market right now. I differ between other stylists because there is no passion behind the work. Other people only see dollar signs and manage to take advantage of people. I’m not driven by money; I’m driven by my purpose.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
A young woman starting her career is on fire, hungry, and ready to see the benefits. My advice, keep God first, remain humble, and always put in the work. No shortcuts. Taking shortcuts lead to dead ends. Write out your goals and plans every week. Discipline yourself so you can make your deadlines. Research your business, and competitors. Grind like no other day matters. Each day is a new beginning for your career to take off.
