Meet Vicki J. Day of Merry Go Round Stained Glass in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicki J. Day.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We’ve always told everyone that this was a hobby that “got out of hand”. Back in ’89 I took a stained-glass class got hooked immediately and it grew into quite a hobby for both me and my late husband Larry Day.

In 1994 we opened a little studio called appropriately Daydreams, and after about a year the owners of the local stained glass store, were wanting to retire and asked if we would be interested in purchasing it. We said “no” but they kept after us until we finally said “yes” and in 1995 we moved in, kept the name even though we knew nothing about the business side of glass, it was our hobby and kind of a small side business. So we read a lot of books and took a lot of classes and through the years tried to figure it out.

It turned out to be a huge blessing for us… we met wonderful friends had a great time!

After 22 years I’m still here (after losing Larry a few years ago to cancer) those same friends have become a real support system for me. While Larry was alive we did a lot of windows, a lot of art, made a lot of friends, taught a lot of classes and got to work with each other every day. So fun! I am still here, with help from my friends, Vernelle Blue and Donna Pampallona, mostly teaching classes and selling supplies, making new friends and enjoying the old ones.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only struggle that really stands out is that we were mostly crafts-people instead of business people… “Day” dreamers. And that a lot of people prefer to purchase over the internet, while the most satisfying part of what I do is interact with the people who do glass art. I don’t want to just pack up product and ship it out all day! How boring.

Please tell us about Merry Go Round Stained Glass.
We are the only stained glass supply company in Fort Worth, TX. I treat all of our customers and students with the respect they deserve. I love to watch a beginning student come in with an eagerness, but a little insecurity and watch them gain confidence as their skills improve. I love being their personal cheerleader.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Making mud pies under the morning glories and just feeling happy.

Growing up in a safe and loving environment instilled in me a peace and confidence that still follows me around today.

Wonderful store, delightful people. Love the encouragement you get any time you are there. I don’t like to purchase glass over the internet. I want to see how the light shines thru it.

I took a class about 30years ago while home pregnant on maternity leave. I loved the class and would love to take another in the near future. I don’t remember the name of the couple that gave the classes but they were wonderful and their little shop was in Lakeside. I would like to know what the cost is for a beginner and what tools would I be required to buy. Please email me when you have time. Thank you,
    Gayle
