Hidden Gems: Local Businesses & Creatives You Should Know

Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series. Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

The first year that I began taking clients was definitely the hardest year for me. Like most people starting out in the beauty industry, I really struggled to build a steady clientele. It’s really hard when there are so many other people doing the exact same thing as you, that’s when I learned the importance of individuality. I quickly realized that I didn’t want to specialize in your typical one color manis, I wanted to create nail sets that you don’t come across every day. Once I started prioritizing certain designs and only posting the sets that I really enjoyed, my social media presence started growing and I quickly attracted the type of clients that I had been looking for. Read more>>

One other big challenge all rehabbers have is transport for injured and orphaned wildlife. Rehabbers cannot just drive around all day picking up animals. Otherwise, we would not have time to treat and care for said animals. We take around 80 to 100 plus calls a day during baby season and any time we have big heat waves. That is a lot of animals to find help for. We rely heavily on the public/finders securing and bringing in wildlife to the closest permitted rehabber. Read more>>

As a young girl, I would perform with my cousins for our family. We would lip sync and put on concerts and plays. I also wanted to model and follow the footsteps of my mother. So, throughout my life, I pursued the entertainment business, while maintaining school and a work balance. I went to modeling school, took acting classes, entered talent shows and won pageants. As a native Texan, I have performed on stage, independent films, commercials, print work, etc. I took the leap and moved to Los Angeles for a while and made a few waves. Upon my return to Dallas, I worked in corporate America, while trying to regain my footing in the industry. It was challenging to work a nine to five and try to pursue an acting career. Read more>>

I grew up in Terrell, east of Dallas. I could read very early before I started kindergarten. Both of my parents and my grandmother, with whom I spent summers, were avid readers. It was not unusual for my family to go to the library on Saturday, return home with 10 to 15 books a piece, and still run out of things to read before the next Saturday. My mom and dad were both writers as well. So, no surprise I began writing in fourth grade. Read more>>

By the time we moved to Plano, I was getting into heavier stuff: Pearl Jam, Megadeth, Dream Theater (always what I thought at the time was a pretty eclectic spread, not yet realizing the vast world of music out there that lies outside of the rock genre). It was around 4th grade when I picked up the guitar. I think the intro to “Come As You Are” by Nirvana was the first thing I figured out how to play on my own. Read more>>

I decided to get an agent because even though I loved theatre I also wanted to be on the big screen someday too. I revamped my resume, had my husband take some headshots of me (I couldn’t afford professional ones at the time) and submitted them to talent agencies. I ended up signing with Boysen Talent and have been getting booked for commercials since. My first commercial ended up being a SAG commercial (if you’re an actor you know this is a big deal) and would later book more commercials. And now, I have a movie that’s coming out soon too! I’ve been very fortunate in my career so far. I’ve done a lot of shows over the years and I still feel the same way about acting. It is my first love. Read more>>

Even at a young age, I’ve always cared about my appearance. My hair had to be perfect, clothes had to color coordinate, my shirt had to be tucked in just right, and my shoes, they had to be clean. I was born in Glendale, California, to an Italian mother and a Croatian father. My last name “SZABO” is a Hungarian surname meaning “Tailor”. Deep down I’m sure this plays a part in my love for menswear and tailored clothing. After all, the Croatians did invent the necktie, and we already know how the Italians are with style. I watched my Italian grandfather, “Nonno” in Italian, put on a suit layered with a cardigan, horsebit loafers, and a fedora hat just to walk to the grocery store everyday, a mile each way. You never know who you will run into I guess. Read more>>

Without ever working as a bartender, I envisioned a bar that offered not just drinks, but an experience—a place where professionals could unwind, reconnect, and feel at home. I wanted to create an atmosphere with warmth, creativity, and authenticity. The fun part was studying the craft of mixology, experimenting with unique flavors, and curating a menu that reflects both classic and innovative cocktails that reflect all of my upbringing and tells some of my story: we have food and dirnk items that represent the East coast, the West coast and the South. Read more>>

“In 2013, I left my job as a baker and decided to go back to school. During this time, I was training for obstacle course races and wanted a custom shirt. The online prices were steep—$35 for a simple design—and I needed a cheaper way. So, I built a screen-printing press out of wood, following a YouTube design. It was basic, functional, but definitely had room for improvement. Read more>>

Let’s see! I have been in the business since 2004. I have been a realtor in the state of Texas for 6 years. I have been in the business long enough to experience the highs and lows. Not at all—it’s been a journey of growth, learning, and determination. When I first left the corporate healthcare world to start my own agency, there was a lot of uncertainty. I always seemed to have a project going on and it became a family joke. My family would say, “Mom has another project.” Those projects usually entailed decorating my home, planning events, sprucing up family members’ homes, and even transforming friends’ porches. As my children grew older, I had more chances to volunteer at their school. I had the privilege of planning and designing two proms, organizing a fundraiser gala, and styling several weddings through community contacts. I had the honor of planning and styling my best friend’s wedding, which was my first all-inclusive project (meaning I was the wedding planner and stylist). Read more>>

In 2010, I walked into what I thought would be a spin class at the gym, but instead, it was a Zumba class. I told myself to stay since I had limited time before work. That class changed my life. A lot of my classical training went out the window, but the heart of dancing remained. Watching people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and skill levels come together was mesmerizing. In the classical world, everything is about perfection, but in that room, the best dancer was the one having the most fun. The instructor facilitated that energy. There was no competition, no expectation—just pure movement and joy. That was what I wanted to create in my own way. Read more>>

I Think no road is ever smooth especially when you are in a transition period in your life. I Moved to Dallas after getting out what I think was one of the worst relationships I’ve been in. I dealt with a a lot of physical and emotional abuse and I feel like coming here I had to start from scratch. I was freshly 30 and didn’t really know what direction I wanted to go in. I knew that firstly I needed to heal within and I found myself getting closer to god and as well know he will make a way and for that I’m truly blessed. I owe everything to him Read more>>

I started teaching myself how to coupon out of curiosity! I also enjoy math, so it became a game at some point. Once I was fully comprehended how to coupon, you could not keep me out of the stores. Going to the store often, I accumulated too much stuff, but I kept going back as I couldn’t believe my savings. Times are hard and the price of essential items are steadily rising. I mentioned to my parents that I wanted to be a blessing unto others and only mentioned to my family members that I would resell items to them at an affordable price to help them out. My family and friends started to tell others, and I continued to grow and reach more people that were interested in the bundles that I created for reselling. Read more>>

The idea sparked from a personal moment of disappointment—waiting for friends who stood me up while I sat alone on my couch. In that moment of vulnerability, I knew I needed to cultivate something beautiful from it. I shared my vision on Meetup, hesitating at first.
